Hell I shouldn't complain, atleast I finaly got out. Mike and Marcelo have been calling me for awhile to join them on a hike, but I haven't found the time in the last few weeks, but today finally worked out.

It was a nice lil hike along side a lake. There is a lil peninsula with a fire ring and table where we wanted to play with some toys. So off we go.

A view of the frozen lake at the beginning of the trail.

More to come

Finally we reach the spot.

First task is get a fire going. Temp was about 25F or -3C for you Canadians(you see I care about you...) Anyway we figured this would be a good spot do to it being secluded, but we didn't think about the lack of wind protection. The wind was howling about 15-20 miles an hour at times, which would have made getting a fire started with natural tinder difficult, but we brought our portable wind block. Once we got our kindling prepped and grounded up some Birch bark, Big Mike just kneeled in front of the tinder blocking all the wind and it took me two strikes from my new Going Gear ferro rod to get the Birch bark lit.

Made a lil Hot Coco to warm us up and then on to playing with some toys.

I took my Helle out the other day to test out but that trip was cut short. So I only got as far as taking down a small sapling with it. It did that quite well. Here are those pics.

Only made a fuzzy with it today. All in all I like the knife. It is a great carver and will most likely use it as that.
test025.jpg

Allthough I wanted to do a bunch of different things with each knife; there just wasn't the time, plus it was too damn cold..( I know I'm a wuss) So all I really did was some fuzzies, and get a feel for how each knife cuts. I am so use to a convex grind, it was difficult to adjust the angle of the scandi knives to cut with out biting too deep. I finally did get the hang of it and after all was said and done I do like them.

Here is a Brian Andrew's Bushcraft.

A few others that were out to play with it.

Still more to come

Nice shots.

I have a Helle Harding and it sure is a nice knife. I always forget to bring it out... seeing your very pretty Helle knife will help me remember to get her out this weekend.

Stay sharp,

Great pics .... looks like you all had a blast

Were the snowshoes necessary to get around ?

Great pics; what kinda dog is the black and tan? I have one that looks identical but unsure of the breed. Thanks!

I miss that distinct crunching sound of the snow under my Tubbs'.

Looks like you guys had a ball.

Thanks fellas, it was a great time.

Mike and I didn't have any, but Marcelo just recently got them so he took them out. He also had on his fancy wool ski pants too, He likes making Mike and I feel poor:grumpy: ;)

Squirrel, Its a mutt of sum sort, I am sure Marcelo will be around to answer soon.

Great photos Tony.
As wonderful as the woods are in the snow, I am ready for spring.

Nice pictures, GS, but what's that white stuff on the ground?

Ours is all gone (for the moment).

Hallo (my nordic greeting), It was a nice time today and worth the tongue lashing I got when I got home (Ya gotta let em think they're in charge). The snowshoes did help but only as far as traction. I had them sized for a different pair of boots at first, paired with the fact that we basically were hiking across a steep slope the whole time. My right foot kept popping out. After some correct adjustments they were fine. As far as necessary, for todays hike the snow was @8" of a very fine powder that didn't even make that distinct crunching sound of the snow under WolfTracker's Tubbs' which he misses. It was like ninja snow, so maybe they gave me a couple of inches of loft. The crampon like cleats underneath were awesome however as the trail was steep and deceptively rocky.

Sadie, my dog, was sired by a mystery man, a traveller by trade and given birth to by an Australian Cattle Dog or ACD for those that like initials. She's a tireless little shepherd (I say little but at 14 months she's 51 lbs (23.13kg, Hi Canada!) and I think she hasn't finished growing.

On these outings, the terrain and scenery, the company, the gear, the playing with fire are to be treasured. Time is always short however and three hours felt like twenty minutes. There's always the next time.

unbeknownst to his fellow forumites, Jake Williams is a pseudoname for cow #4371 who "works" at a slaughterhouse. A fact he inadvertently almost gave away.

Hope to see up this way soon Jake. (hope)

:D

There is no overall temp. We've had as low as 2 degrees F to 62 degrees F this winter.
