i went for a hike on the ny section of the appalachian trail two weekends ago with relatives vacationing from ca...perfect timing since it was the peak of the fall colors.

the uh, oh moment for me...we weren't even 10 min into the hike and everyone were already sitting down and wondering what they got themselves into.

handed my mom and aunt a couple of clif shot bloks (has anti-cramping and electrolytes) and they were ready to go.

worked too well with my mom actually...she just took off!

with my mom pushing the pace and my other relatives wandering all over the place, it was tough to keep the group together...i'd lose sight of my mom and when i catch up to her i notice the rest of my relatives aren't behind me...i ask my mom to stay put and i backtrack and find them taking pics of the same tree for what feels like 15 min :o

my aunt's brand new shoes quickly gave up.

she's a trooper though...i cut off the rest of the sole and she kept on hiking.

...and the other sole gave up soon after. from now on, "fubu'd" will be mentioned in family gatherings for years to come :D

my mom giving me that look, "let's go...you're slowing me down!" :D

i'm surprised my cousin took great interest in fire building...she has shown a lot of interest in hiking lately but too bad she lives too far away...if she'll end up hiking in ca, i'll mention esee's all-girls survival class.

my cousin rolled her ankle pretty bad on one of the leaf-covered rocks while exploring...my mom went on autopilot.

the stone steps is my favorite section since it reminds me of my grandpa's house in the philippines - it has a similar looking stone steps in the woods out back that he & my uncles hand-laid when they were young...my uncle probably didn't have as nice a memory since that was one of their punishments for failing to do their chores :o

dead bugs...fall and winter is my favorite time to hike but all the insects i like to photograph are gone though.

i still can't believe i managed to get them to hike all way up that mountain and back with no complaints.

Beautiful country you got to see there! Looks like your aunt needs some boots;)

Awesome pictures, thank you for sharing.

thanks!

great pics. thanks for taking us along. love your threads.

thanks! i'll try to hike/post more trip reports now that the weather is starting to get cold again :)

Good times with family! Great pictures!

thanks, chris! i hope my cousin gets hooked on hiking and take the rest of my relatives in ca out with her.

thanks! i'm lucky this is 46k+ acres of woods and it's close-by...my aunt just wanted to go ultralight like the a.t. thru-hikers :D

Awesome little adventure man. My family hates going along with me. They I say I get into Marine death march mode to easily. Sorry to hear about your aunts shoes. Urban and outdoors are just not the same, may use this story as to why I wear hikers 24-7 now. Keep the treks coming and as always, thanks for sharing.

PS, dont get upset brother, but your cousin is HOT!

wow the landscape is gorgeous! I havent gone in about a month, but I'll probably go sometime next week. Always a pleasure to look at all your pictures, and it looks like you guys had a good time.

Amazing photography as usual brother! It's good to see family take these hikes with us and see a little of what makes us who we are!

Awesome photos as always Jay. Looks like you all had a blast out there. Note to self, no to the FUBU! Ya know, I've scrolled back and forth through these photos, and if I didn't know you better, I'd think you were out there bladeless :)

Those are great pics, Wish we had more fall color here in S cali. It looks that with a little more hiking experience your mom might do better then you in the outdoors.
Now you got to get her and everyone else to go hiking more often in CA.

thanks, spoolup! i'm the same way as you, i wear my hiking boots on the street too whenever i can...not just that but same goes with my hiking pants, shirt, etc. they're very comfortable so that's a bonus.

haha, i'll relay your complement to my cousin...maybe she'll hike even more now! :)

thanks! that's pretty much the peak since i drove by the area yesterday and i saw most of the leaves on the ground now.

we're going on an overnighter next weekend by the way (veteran's day weekend). same group of guys as the last overnighter...i'll pm you the details and hopefully you can join us!

thanks, brother! indeed, my favorite places to hike just got even more special since i have memories of family being there.

thanks, brian! i learned a few things from you browsing through your trip reports over the years :)

yes, don't get fubu'd! haha...i had my fiddleback 12" machete and fallkniven s1 in the pack and a spyderco pm2 in my pocket. i made my uncle carry a pack as well and inside it is my orange mora. i thought about making them all hold a knife and posing for me but i thought it might be too much for them - saving that for next time :D i'm just amazed they went for a hike at all.

thanks! i sometimes forget what i call hiking (and have all these specialized gear) my mom & dad called it "everyday life when they were kids" - going to school, going to a friend's house, going to the backyard chicken coop to gather fresh eggs, etc. it all involved the woods :o

You can't go wrong with a hike on the AT. You'd have to try hard to find a stretch that doesn't have a nice view or an overlook or some cool little spot tucked away along the trail.
