another day hike: snow & ice on the appalachian trail.

Harriman- how lucky are we NY/NJers to have such a great place so close to home?

Nice trip report.

See you on the trails.

Bean

Love the AT and it's many shelters. I'd love to have a similar shelter on some wooded land some day. I love stone sided walls!

Did you know about all the rattlesnakes in the area? Too cold right now but in May they will be out moving around.

yes, sir but i haven't seen one specifically on this area. from your videos, now i know they thrive in our cold climate so i'm on the lookout for them...i saw this beautiful one last fall up in the ramapo mountains:

Great photos, when you come from the flat lands of Kansas, anything with trees and hills look great!!!

thanks! i've never been anywhere else (save for california) so i can't imagine not having hills.

These shots are great, inspiring to get out and hike early. And that section you were at isn't too far from me.

thanks!

yeah, those are more like woods mansions...lots of work definitely went into making those.

Thanks for sharing and for bringing us along on the trip. The pictures are great, really neat stuff man.

thanks!

This looks great! Reminds me of the Ozarks in Winter time.

thanks! i wish we had more snow though.

Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.

thanks!

My daughter has been trying to entice me with pictures to come live with them in Idaho. My constant thought is... Where are all the trees and why is everything frozen?

Sweet pictures! I like your pack, how do you like it? I have the Osprey Kestrel 68 in the same color combination, and I love it.

You got any inside shots of that first cabin?? My favorite!

no but i'll take interior pics next time i'm there...the walls are really well sealed, no drafts at all!

thanks! i like osprey packs for day hikes and mountain biking...for overnight loads though i prefer my kifaru packs.

great pics man. looks like it was a fun time. i think i really like that bag. thanks for sharing

Thanks JV3!! You go to some awesome spots thanks for sharing! Certainly places I would rather be.

you're welcome! that's why i try to hike often - only an hour away and it's all free :)

thanks! in my sig, i have a link to my review - tons of pics of the kestrel series.

Awesome pics Jay! That looks like a beautiful area. I wish we had those shelters at this end of the AT, One day I should just keep walking north instead of turning around to go back home :) Really cool luck spotting the dear and getting the shots. Dude, any time you don't take the SLR you're going to regret it, just deal with it and let it go because sometimes you just need to enjoy the hike. It's so drab and grey here that a lot of the time in the winter I don't take a camera at all because I need a break from it. All growing season long though, between articles and website work, I'm going to be packing the weight of a DSLR and lenses, and sometimes two DSLRs (long hike in and don't want to risk missing the shots) plus gear, so I am enjoying the break while I can :)

thanks, brian! indeed, sometimes i really should just leave the camera behind and just go hike.

i'm surprised that several people mentioned they don't have those shelters on the a.t., or in any part of their woods...the shelters i've been on have their donor's name in a stone plaque somewhere so i guess it takes quite a bit of money to get the resources/man power to get one built.

JV3..As usual way,way interesting thread and pics, thanks for sharing......Your actually inspiring me...Last year I did three kayak/camping trips on a local river that had some incredible views..This summer I'm sharing with the forum and trying my hand at photography..Hopefully it will inspire some older fellas who can't backpack anymore..CD
