Got a chance to get out again today. I took a few pics of the area. The I cleared out a small place and used my Grohmann #4 and cut some small branches up and used them and some grass along with my Charles May Necker and started a small fire. That May necker sure throws a nice spark. Started right up. Anyway how you enjoy. BTW the Grohmann is a carbon steel version and the May in S30V.

I was raised in Chicago--and now living in Texas-miss the snow even less.

However-you make hanging out in the snow look like fun..

How cold was it??

Great pics, some beautiful scenery you have to put up with ;) I still want to try out one of those carbon Grohmans one of these days.

I have never chopped a tree when it was that cold-is there a huge difference compared to when it's say 80 degress out??

Does the tree "feel" harder in anyway??

I was whacking trees at -25 -30 and it was like chopping iron. Sometimes branches would break off at the tree joint as opposed to being hacked off. I later built a tee pee type emergency structure to see if I could do it. I used a tomahawk that time and it went much better. I didn't use a saw under those conditions, but my impression is that it would be pretty handy. The quicker I can do things in the extreme cold, the better.

And last ones

Gorgeous pics thanks. That grass looks similar to what is found around here. I found that the wheat like frill on the top of the grass stalk really lit up. Maybe because it's finer or has oil in the seeds?, I don't really know.

--I agree Bro....

Thanks!!

Those are a couple of good looking knives. I was real close to buying one of those flat ground Grohmanns a couple of years ago but I didn't. Seeing these pics makes me want to pick one up again. I just saw that you're at Fort Wainwright. That's great, I spent fours years there myself in the 1/17 Inf. I miss being up there. Maybe someday when money permits I'll be able to go back.

Take care. Heath

Hey man,

Tons of birch there and you use pine and grass to catch a spark :D

I thought it was Poplar. Not that I'm any kind of tree authority. I just remember researching habitat info for Ruffed Grouse hunting last fall and the grouse eat Poplar buds. I found the grouse in mixed bush/trees including Poplars. With that said, watch, they'll probably be Birch trees. :D Good catch on alternative fire starting materials though, I didn't see it.;)

Yeah 2-1 used to be right across the pond from us. They were building new barracks when I left so you all are probably not even in the same buildings anymore. Does the units still fall under the 172nd seperate Inf. Brigade? I'm just curious. I wish you the best man and stay warm. Spring is right around the corner.;) Then you can go out at night and give those knives a workout with plenty of daylight to see with.

Take care. Heath
