Another Dumb Question: What <5" Fixed Blade would you recommend me?

I second the Dozier. They are the some of the only knives I've ever seen that had a really, really good sheath and his grinds are first rate. I saw a lot of uneven bevels at Blade, many on expensive customs, and his were just about perfect. They really are the total package, I think you'd be very pleased with one.

Wow, the Dozier KM-2FG Ranger Light is a beauty...
Got to have me hands on a piece of that...

I have two fixed blades in that length: the SERE Operator and the CRK Mountaineer II. They're both excellent, but with different characteristics. The SERE Operator, though strong, is quite light and would be a good back - packing knife, when weight is a factor. I don't like the tek - lok sheath, though. The Mountaineer II is heavier and stronger, much more a survival - style knife. If weight is not a problem for you, then I would whole - heartedly recommend the Mountaineer II (clip point) or the Sable IV (spear point). If you want to stay light, the SERE Operator would not be a bad choice.

Chris Reeves Knives are supper tough.I hve the Mountaineer I and II.Quality is great and they are very tough knives. The price ain't bad either.

What's it for? Do you want/need something lightweight like a Spyderco Moran or AG Russell Deer Hunter? Something robust, like the Becker Crewman Utility, Swamp Rat Howling Rat or Busse Badger Attack? Or something in between like the D2 Swamp Rats?

If I were buying a 5 inch fixed blade for my own uses, it would be a Spydie Moran or Perrin, but that's just me.

Very pleased with my Gerber Yari, 4.8", 154CM steel with coated blade, micarta handles, concealex sheath, ~$70. General purpose knife that gives an extremely well balanced feeling and is a best buy if you buy right. MSRP is 140. At that price I would have bought a Swamp Rat 5.5" Camp Tramp, and may anyway. Also take a look at the 5.25" BK2, a very nicely designed hunter/camper for ~$65.

I'll second the Newt Livesay Air Assault as a general purpose knife. I have two of them and the smaller ICU.

Chris Reeves had a 5" Green Beret at Blade. I dunno when they'll be available for production, but I was very, very impressed by them.

Edited: My apologies - the blade is in fact 5.5". Sorry to be OT.

Hey folks..

Actually I just like to keep a <5" handy, I do have other knives for my outdoor use but while travelling around the highlands, a short blade may be good...

Gerber Yuri? Sounds good too.
I think you guys have suggested quite a bit...
Great help
Thanks man...

I don't see how you could beat a swamp rat. The bandicoot and howling rat are under 5 inches (4 or 4.5 inches) are awesome! A very good value for the money. A good working knife.
