It is Tracy's idea (from USA Knife Maker Supply). Posted already on another forum but I figured I'd post mine here. 20$ Box fan from WallyMart and 10$ furnace filter from Home Depot. Easy to do and cheap. Also cause you can't have too many air cleaning devices in your shop.

Thanks again Tracy.

I'm afraid for the square footage in my shop I'd need 10 of those running. But, I may just set up a couple and see how it does. Thanks for the reminder, Patrice.

So, is the fan blowing through the filter (sucking dust through the fan into the backside of the filter) or is it blowing away, pulling dust from the air to the outside of the filter?

I use this too and the fan is sucking air through the filter on mine. The suction of the fan holds the filter on with no need for tape. I have one sitting on each side of my grinder and they pick up a LOT of grinding dust. I paid 14.99 for my fans on sale at Home Depot and $4.00 each for the filters. Works great for me and my other option was no dust collection at al other than the normal bucket of water sitting on the floor under the belt.

Yes the fan sucks air through the filter.

Nathan from what I read those really do a good job, no need for 10. Of course I can't tell you how they work just yet since I just started and my shop is pretty dust free so I may not see a big change myself. But for those like Chris that only have that it should be nice.

(Thanks for the edit. ;) )

Well, after making knives for a while and living in West Texas where there is often more dirt in the air than on the ground, I could definitely use them! :D I'll get a couple of fans and filters and give it a go. It would be great to get some wall timers that you could set the fans to run for a couple hours after leaving before turning off.

(and no problem, bud :D)

I cobbled one together with duct tape a few days ago. I was astonished how much crud it pulled out of the air on the first day!

That's a really neat idea. I noticed that a lot of those furnace filters are rated for trapping allergens so I'm guessing they will trap pretty fine particles.
Thanks for posting that Patrice.
