WOW. Just got my 42S today. My only complaint is WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I GET ONE SOONER??? This knife is so awesome!!! At first, the first one or two flips, I thought, "Geez, it's soooo light, and the handles are shaped a bit oddly. ****, I'm not sure I like it!" Then I thought, "No, wait, it's just different." (I'm used to a Jag and Rostfrei that I have) So I flipped it, then flipped it some more, and before you know it, I was even flipping it while I was driving around tonight!!! (Which is a bad idea, because I was weaving as if I had been drinking! Needless to say, I put the knife away quickly...)
All I can say is if you are reading this, and don't have a BM 42 yet, GET ONE NOW!!! The quality is truly the best you will find anywhere!!!! The titanium handles feel SO great, and the sound they make when flipped is as addicting as the way it feels in your hand.
One of the BEST aspects of the knife (Surprisingly enough) is the fact that aesthetically it is NOT perfect. Yes, I said that it is NOT aesthetically perfect. There are some very minor marks from machining, and a piece of Ti that needs filing inside one of the holes on one of the handles. But these minute flaws, to me, at least, only serve to make the knife feel more unique, as if it was handmade (are they? I don't know...) In short, these marks give the knife soul. Character. It's wonderful! In my opinion, it does NOT detract from the knife at ALL.
Also, I like the fact that the handles are long. I've read some people here complaining about it, but I like the length a lot. I find that the jag and POS I have are too short, especially in comparison to the BM. The length of the POS and Jag handles have bothered me for a while, and now in comparison to the BM, I probably won't touch them anymore!!!
The only true flaw I had with this Bali, was that the cup on the latch handle would stick to the tang pin. What a pain! I was disappointed, but it seems to have pretty much disappeared after this first evening of flipping. Sweet!!!

Anyway, I'm going to study for my test now, but just wanted to share my joy with you all, and to encourage the Benchmade-less people out there to GET ONE!!! Now I'm going to have to keep myself from trying to flip the thing in bed...(that could get ugly!)

Congrats on the 42S!! I know how you feel about not stopping flipping. I found having my gf in the passenger seat made me stop flipping, as I didn't feel like impaling her...lol.

Actually, in an opposition of what you say, I am actually planning on getting a couple of Jags or Bears to practice new moves with. I'd rather drop one of them than my 42. I've already dropped it a couple of times(no damage) but I worry about destroying the tip or something.

The 42 rocks! I've gotta get me some more balisongs.....

I must have dropped mine a thousand times and the most I ever got was a milimeter wide dent (really small)

I just droped mine not ten minuts ago! I try to practice over carpet (don't need holes in mattress!). Well, we heat by wood at my house, and our wood stove is set on these 12x12 or 14x14 inch, by inch and a half thick concrete squares will small rocks all over the top for looks. It was over my head when I lost it, and it hit the edge of one of these blocks!!!!! It threw a big spark off! The damage to 42-AS: Minor scuff on one handle, and a very small dent on the swedge near the tip, and of course, that well known barbed tip. Not bad!

Hey, which hole on yours has a bad spot? Mine has one on the safe handle, hole nearest the blade one thside will Benchmade (over) U.S.A.

Ziptie - Actually, I poked the metal piece that was sticking up with the tip of a pen, and it just came right out! It was just a flake of Ti. Pretty cool. Still lovin' my 42!!! Impresses all my buddies too! They're awed by the fact that it's illegal here in CA. Unfortunately, none of them understand the quality of BM. One of my friends actually asked me "how much was this, like $20?" I couldn't believe him!!! *SIGH* I'll just have to teach him!!!

After a more throrough exam I found that one of my drops had bent the tip a little bit. not badly, but enough to annoy me. Went to work on it with a 204 Sharpmaker, and got it generally back to shape. It sounds as though this is a common occurence, right?

Ouch! What did you drop yours on? It's a BM, I take it? Too bad....
My only real complaint now about the BM is the sheath - how can they stick the 42 in that sheath at the factory, plainly see that the flap does not cover the velcro all the way, and say it's ok??? Whatever....It's a nice sheath, and I may be getting a concealex for my new baby anyway...

Dr. Jones

It seems that BM took into account only the length of the 42's handle when cutting the pattern for its sheath. The additional exposed tang of the blade appears to be the reason for the misfit. I'm currently using the sheath "as is"--IMO, "less velcro contact" translates into easier and slightly quieter openings. Nonetheless, I'm also on the lookout for a more secure and efficient sheath.

The concealex sheaths are very tightly molded to fit and BM42, and a BM42 only. The knife is basically held in by friction. From what I have read, and been told by the maker of them himself, Clay, they will keep your knife secure while running, jumping, almost anything you can give it. They are supposed to be very secure. Clay is well respected here on the forums, and lots of people here seem to have the concealex sheaths, so I trust them. Do a search on the forums under "concealex" and you should find all the info. you want.

Good luck!

Um, I dropped mine on a tiled bathroom floor.

Seeing as where I dropped it, I never took the time to go see what the damage was to the floor. But, it probably fared better with its ceramic tiles than my blade did..
