What a knife!

Roger Claunch of Bayou Lafourche Knife Works ran a knife give-away to celebrate his new location. One of the twelve knives he offered was a large serrated Sebenza and I was lucky enough to be the first prize winner.

I never held a Sebenza before this beauty arrived this morning. I’ve been walking around and around with it all day – it’s interfering with my typing! I can’t put it down …

It’s surprisingly light for so solid a knife, and balances just behind the tang, perfect for working: the blade seems to move forward when I open it. I can understand collecting the more decorated versions, but this plain model was made to go out into the world and cut things.

Now I know why people get so enthusiastic about them. I feel an UMFAAN coming on!

My thanks again to Roger for his generosity:

You lucky dog. Welcome to the club. Just in case you find that you DON'T like the knife, I'd be willing to trade you the Sebenza for my beat up Spyderco Endura. It would break my heart to depart with the knife, but I would do it for YOU. I hate to see a guy who isn't happy with his knife, and I wouldn't want to leave you without one. Let me know... If not, enjoy. Take care, and stay sharp.

Wow, what a great feeling. Someone willing to part with their own beloved blade just to make me happy. Unfortunately, I still can't seem to unwrap my greedy little fingers from the Sebenza. But that's OK -- I'm actually getting to like it!

I have only one complaint, and it is a biggie. My other knives are starting to look shabby in comparison ...

I carry it constantly. I packed my Kershaw Talon away. I set my Benchmade 975 aside. I don't even use any of my kitchen knives anymore. And I've given two small knives away altogether.

Maybe I could get a Sable for the kitchen along with that Umfaan.

Esav, my first Sebenza was a NICA tanto, a very nice knife, although a full sized knife. While at my local knife shop, they had all three sizes of Sebenza, full-sized, small, and the Umfaan. Due to its possible collectability, and full size, I decided to put away my NICA Sebenza, and go for the small one. I found the Umfaan WAY too small, and tough to open, and actually uncomfortable to open. the leverage that I needed to open the knife with my thumb required me to bend my thumb in such a way that the pointed tip of the thumb stud was painful. And as far as utility goes, I still found it way too small. MY advice, go for the small sebenza. It's large enough for cutting chores, yet small enough to be comfortable in the hand without being cumbersome. Good luck with either.

Thanks! Of course, I was thinking of wearing my Umfaan like my Micra, on a chain, as jewelry!

You may be right about the size. I'll check one out live before I buy; I usually use fairly large tools.
