I agree with you guys that all this BS with the school systems is out of hand.I do all I can to educate the kids in my community the aspects of treating a knife or gun properly.I will take any of the kids in my neighborhood hunting with me and they are all welcome in my shop anytime.I do demonstrations at the schools showing the kids AND TEACHERS AND PRINCIPLE that knives are the oldest tool known to man and show how they are made and take some knives with me to show,I am allowed to do this as long as none of the kids touch any of the knives.I try to show the younger grades the most and educate them. The local library puts a display of my knives in every year and keeps asking me for the next year saying that they get allot of really great respsone to it and get paople into the library at that time of year that they never see at any other time.We have a community festival every fall which I set up a forging demonstration at and also donate a custom knife for the chamber of commerce to raffle off to help out the historical rebuilding of the community.
But I wonder at times if it is worth it.A few years back my neighbors son was a junior in high school and had a beat up old truck that he was very proud of but had to work on allot,he had a small 3 blade Buck pen knife with red scales that I had given him for his birthday in his TOOL BOX in the back of the truck (he did this so he didn't get in trouble carrying it at school) and guess what. One day after school the truck wouldn't start so he lifted the hood and needed to clean the battery posts so with no one else in the parking lot and school out he took the small knife out of the TOOL BOX and proceeded to clean the posts and cable ends.At that time the principle came out and asked him if he needed some help to which he replied no Sir I have got it now and was putting the little knife back in the TOOL BOX and the principle had a total fit that he had that little knife on the school grounds and was going to suspend him over it.Well his Dad and me went to talk to the principal and said that if he would have called either one of us he would have seen the same thing done to the truck only the knife would have came from our pocket, and that we had told him to put the knife in the tool box for that purpose as he had been having trouble with the truck. We asked why he was not allowed to use this TOOL as a TOOL for which he was using it and we were told that there were other tools that could have been used even though he didn't have one of those post cleaners in the tool box.Well we got him out of it but they just kept giving the boy a hard time the rest of the year and so he just dropped out of school and took his GED instead of graduating,Which protested with him not to do but he said that the hassles weren't worth it any more and decided to just get a job.He is now a father himself and a forman for a construction company and carries a knife in his pocket at all times just as many of us do and has never been in trouble with the law at all.Now what was fair in this,Using a tool as a TOOL and end up loosing his education for it.It makes me sick!
I over heard the principle at my daughters school talking to another adult last year and the principle was telling the other adult that parents need to start correcting there kids more at home and not expext the schools to do it,but yet a friend of mine got in big trouble as in they tried to take his kids away because he gave his daughter a spnking for doing something she wasn't supposed to and had been warned that she would get spanked and had already been grounded for it before and she did it again. My daughter came home from school one day and told me that I wasn't allowed to spank her anymore or she could turn me into the police and she is 9,I let her know real quick that I was the Dad and That If she was old enough to tell me what to do that she could start working and take care of things herself.I gave her some odd jobs around the house to do to earn money to go buy what she needed and not toys ,she thought that this was fun for about a week until she couldn't buy any toys aand wasn't able to play on the weekend because she had to work, she told me she would rather get a spanking for doing something wrong that that was not fun not playing or buying toys.I know that it was a little extreme to do this but it worked.I also was talking to one of our Police oficers here a while back and hes said that parents needed to go back to correcting the kids the way Dad and grandpa used to,like when you got into trouble at school you didn't want to face them becuse you knew a trip to the wood shed was in order. But yet he is the same guy that comes out to pick you up because you spanked you child and someone said something about it and the government decides to step in and make you out to be the bad guy.(I am not talking about beating a kid black and blue here just a stear spanking like you used to get in the old days before they were not allowed )This officer said that the PARENTS are the reason the kids are as wild as they are now days not the schools or the government.Go figure that one...
Sorry for getting long winded here This is just a topic that really Pisses me off and I can get on a soap box about it.....
