another forge floor/flux queston

J. I have to agree w/ Darrel wholeheartedly. If you are going to be working damascus build yourself a vertical forge and do away w/ all your problems. I have two verticals and a horizontal. The horizontal forge has not been lit up in over two years now. I do it all in the verticals anymore.
 
Hello all,
I don't want to hijack this thread but I have a question about the pipe diameter for a vertical forge.

Even using large diameter pipe like 14’’ + 2’’ of refractory you are end up with 10'' of inside forge diameter. Is this enough for making an 12’’ billet?
Is it okay to have part of the billet outside the forge while drawing out?

Hey Peter, did you just buy some stainless steel sheet for your tray or did you find one somewhere?

I scrouged it J. I think I got it from an old counter top from a Taco Bell!
