Very nice! Good job on minimalizing without being crazy about it.

Where do you carry your food? Do you carry a stove/Fuel?

Hey Myakka,

Where did you get the Brunton Gentleman’s Compass?

I tried to buy one and they said I didn't qualify. :(

Nice hiking buddies ..... I particularly like that gator. I remember stumbling upon them during quite a few trips into the swamps when I lived in Florida.

A question: how do you like that hatchet? Do you find it to be a little bulky or heavy to carry? It looks like it might be a little overkill but the design looks nice ..... at least from what I can see with the sheath on. Thanks in advance.

The Hatchet is a Gransfors Bruk Mini Hatchet. The hatchet is hand forged in Sweden from top quality steel and then carefully hardened and tempered to Rockwell 57 for the best combination and hardness and toughness. The head weighs 11 oz. and the face is 2 1/2" wide. The hickory handle is 10 1/4" long and the hatchet comes with a split grain leather sheath to protect the edge when not in use. This is a small hatchet that is very easy to carry around with you. I really like mine, and prefer it to a large chopping blade. The only down side is it is pricey.

You guys with the DevilDog... How heavy is it fully packed? Been thinking of getting one while I can, but concerned with the weight for a full days hike.

I like the minimilist approach to things. Sometimes it is just a hard call on which knife to bring! Great post Myakka!

the mini hatchet is a great little tool and they dont cost very much there a lot cheaper than some big choppers a lot cheaper

Even with 2 full 32oz water bottles it is only several pounds, alot lighter then a backpack . I really like my setup.

Thanks Diamond Dog :D and for which knife to bring, try a different one each time you head out on an adventure. :D

Hi all, I like your set up very nice. I did not see a first aid kit on your list do you carry one? I did not see tinder ( like cotton and pj etc. ) what do you use for starting your fire or do start one? state park and all or is that a no no?
Thanks
Bryan

Fire always. As for tinder all natural. I gather it early in the day before any rain and store in my front pocket. There are alot of pine trees in Florida and finding pitchwood/Fatwood is very common. pitchwood is my favorite tinder.
