Another GEC or something else?

My Bday is coming up! My better half was wondering what I wanted. I want another traditional folding pocket knife.
I really really love my GEC "charlow". So I was thinking of another GEC BUT there are other brands that look nice also. I want something that I can carry everyday for EDC tasks but big enough to be usable.

So are there any other worthwhile brands that as a noobie knife collect, I should own (Queen, Canal Street, Schatt and Morgan, Northwoods?)?

I own:
2 Victorinox knives
1 GEC
2 Case knives (both over 20 yrs old)
2 Rough Riders
1 Buck 110
1 No6 Opinel

I say Northwoods! :) Seriously, any of the four brands you list would be a great addition.

Shameless Plug! :D Any of those you listed would be a good choice. Find one you like the looks of, that has the materials you want and go for it!

If you like the "Charlow," I think you'll really like the Boy's Knife or the Pony Jack also.

You should really consider a Boker traditional pocketknife. The consistent quality, attractiveness, reasonable prices, and traditional styling have made these a winner ever single time for me.

Queen, especially the File&Wire series and the Queen City traditionals are the very few modern traditionals on par with the quality of Great Eastern.

No traditional accumulation could be complete without an original USA Old Timer.

Canal Street Cutlery makes excellent products too.

Gec #92 Eurekas are nice for daily carry substantial enough main blade & the coping secondary is a nice touch, but the Northwoods #31 is looking nice (-:

Try out a Queen, or better yet a Schatt & Morgan (their "nicer" brand), if you haven't yet.

Buck 301. Great solid 3-blade Stockman style.

Northwoods knives are great - made for Derrick Bohn (KnivesShipFree.com) by Queen or GEC , depending on the model. I'm looking forward anxiously to the Northwoods #31 that GEC is building for them.

GEC has some new versions of their #48 Dogleg Jacks/Trappers coming out, including a special factory order version (SFO) through Charlie Campagna, the designer of the "Charlow". I guess those will be Charlegs. :)

I still like Case for daily carry knives. The ones I have are just fine. But if you are trying to diversify your product line then maybe the two you have are enough.

The Victorinox Alox-scaled Pioneer/Electrician/Farmer or smaller Cadet lines are hard to beat for pure utility and are attractive in their own right.

I don't have any personal experience with Queen or Canal Street.

That new Northwoods Norfolk is looking pretty special. I also like the new "half " trapper Charlie is working on, which is going to be killer. I'm betting.

Try any Queen knife with their Amber Carved Bone Stag handles, D2 blades. Really worthwhile.

GEC and Opinel!

Seriously though, with the opinel, you are really asking "#6, #7 and #8" for the same price as the GEC.

Others mentioned Queen with Amber bone and D2. I only recommend for those who know how to work an edge down (D2 is stubborn for re-profiling unless you have the know how, and tools).

Heck, you can buy a set of 10 in a gift box for the price of a Great Eastern. :D

Not that Great Easterns aren't worth it; my Gambler just arrived in the mail. Besides, I already have the gift set of Opinels... plus the Garden Knife, plus the #13, plus the 1890 reproduction... :D  :D

I say a Northwoods if not another GEC. Northwoods Knives are manufactured by GEC so I don't know if that counts. It's hard to look past GEC sometimes. Lately I have been interested in Queen and Schatt and Morgan knives. I've read good things about both companies although I think Queen might manufacture S&M knives.

I have a queen canoe that I won in a giveaway here, it's superbly made. I have quite a few GEC's and Case's myself, so I ordered another queen the other day, a 3.25 inch stockman. I like the smaller patterns.

I really like GEC but I think they have the lions share of the discussions here in the traditional forum at the minute. They are consistent with their quality and variety of output, but like you said in the OP their are lots of others out there.... Diversification is good.

Happy hunting :)

They do, yes. The upscale Queen knives, although often made with only 420 stainless, are Schatt and Morgan, and the nicest of the Schatt and Morgan knives are generally the File & Wire series with ATS-34 steel. The Queen Heritage Series is another upper-end 'special' line from Queen; although I love mine, the Heritage knives certainly got mixed reviews around here. The Queen City knives are another premium effort by Queen, and mine is excellent.

The S&M File & Wire series III are my favorites, and highly recommended. Only available on the secondary market, though.

Id try Queen, S&M, or Case. Id stay away from canal street unless you can either handle the knife first or at least make sure the store you buy from has a good return/exchange policy.

Queen and Schatt and Morgan pull at my heart strings a little more than GEC for whatever reason.
Happy birthday sir. Chance.
