When I started out I was like others and started with a Harbor Freight 1x30 grinder. I had the same belt choice problem the most have with the 1x42 and 1x30. I did not have alot of money like most beginners but wanted a grinder with a 2 inch belt. I came across a grinder that really worked out well. I found the Palmgren model 81061. It is a 2x42 so you have more options for belts. It also has a 6 inch disc grinder. The grinder runs from $150-180. I turned out some really nice knives using this grinder. I have never seen this grinder mentioned on this site. The grinder has solid contact wheel so hollow grinding is outbut it does a nice job on flat grinds and is how I learned to flat grind. I now have a Grizzly and a new KMG clone I have not tried out yet. Just another options for you to consider. As a side note I also found a great supplier for various size belts for all my grinders on ebay her name is barbkat and she has really good prices. Sorry this turned out so long.

Barbcats belts are reasonable ,but you will get some thump and wobble on metal as they are not top of the line belts. Should work OK on Handles. I buy belts mostly from Tru-Grit.
