Another Head Pattern I.D.

There will be nothing wrong with the quality of the head but removing the epoxy in order to prepare the eye for a new haft is going to be a PITA (pain in the bum). At least that's what Square_Peg has said about Permabond hangs. I don't have any experience with that stuff.

I got it today. Yup, it's Permabond. How do I figure out if it's an older desirable head or a newer less desirable head?

By the shape of the cheeks. That's an older desirable head.

Now drill, baby, drill.

Then punch out what remains and clean up the eye with a rat tail file.

Yep...what he said. I drilled out a Plumb permabond half-hatchet recently. Just drill and take your time, and then scrape the insides out and rehaft. Luckily the eye is still tapered so a new wood haft can be fitted as normal.

I have a drill press similar to yours however, I don't have the vise like that. I've got to look into getting one of those. I just have a big bench vise. It looks like the 1st step is going to be removing what's left of the handle with a sawzall. It's nice to know that the head is of a decent vintage. BTW, I have a pretty nice, unusual, unused, Spyderco folding knife that was on the pricy side. If anybody has a Kelly perfect Jersey they'd like to trade, let me know.

Oh man, senility has struck. I thought it meant 30/06. Mine doesn't burn oil either, then again it's a bolt-action. I'm going to go lay down now.

No shame in that. Ought 6 is a bit too powerful for me; so 30-40 Krag out of a 96 Springfield carbine is what I've been using in the fields and woods for the past 40+ years.

I still have my father's 1903 Springfield. All original and immaculate bore. Very dear to me.

The Krag is a nice gun if you reload. But it's a little harder to find ammo for.

Also had an original 03 complete with Pederson Device ejection port but it was a real kicker compared to the Krag and the bolt was nowhere near as slick. 30 USA and 303 Brit share the same parent brass but the generous neck of the Krag is a reloaders dream. The only commercial ammo available for Krags has long been RN 180 gr which I gave up on 30 years ago (one went right through a deer without blossoming) and switched over to faster and pointy 150s.
I do have to admit 06 is probably the most versatile firearm cartridge ever created.

My old remington 700 BDL '06 didn't shoot 165 or 180 gr well. I went to 150 gr. and it was very good. I was getting ready for an elk hunt, so I started loading 200 gr Sierra spitzers ( that hunt never transpired). The 200 gr. were so accurate that I never switched back. The unusual thing was, the hotter I loaded them the more accurate they got. The kicker was target practice with my brother. He had a .270 loaded with 150 grs. We were shooting at an iron gong at 50 yards for fun. His 150 gr bullets powdered on the gong and my 200 gr punched holes through it. It was his gong and he was less than happy about my "over powered '06".

At any rate, the deer in Southern CA are small, and by no means require a 200 gr. slug. They are pretty reassuring around bears though. The older I get the more they seem to beat the tar out of me. I'm thinking about going back to the 150s. You're right about the versatility of the '06, but I don't use it. I use one bullet for everything so I don't have to re-calculate drop in my head for bullet weight. One rifle, one caliber, one bullet weight and shape, and a 4x scope and I'm done.

Is it a no no to post gun pics? If not, I'd like to see the Springfield and Krag. I remembered that one of the guys I hunted with as a kid used a Krag, but I don't remember what it looked like. As for the Springfield, the only one I've ever seen in the flesh was sporterized. BTW, whoever developed "Permabond" for Plum was a sadist. At least it gave me a reason to buy a long needed drill press vise.

This might have been consumerism in it's infancy. Rather than go through the drudge of trying to re-haft a broken axe it suddenly became easier/faster to go out and buy a new one.

My 03 went to an appreciative collector in Ohio just before the Canadian gun registry legislation came into effect (1998) and the Krag looks just like any other Google images of Krags. Both are Springfields.
