Hey Guys,

So I am in the market for another knife and need your help. I am actually in the process of setting up a forge to start my own smithing but until then I will have to buy my knives...So the last knife I carried everyday was a Gerber Profile (yeah I know) so it was not the highest quality tool but it worked, I used it for cutting boxes(lots), paper, plastic, prying things, pounding things and also used it many times to split small pieces of wood by placing the edge on the piece and wailing on the spine to split into kindling. I know that I might have abused it a bit much but damn that thing was handy. I ended up tossing it around Dec. of 08' because I had wrinkled the blade(if you looked down at the spine there was a small curve, probably the wood and stabbing boxes at work). I also ended up going through a cheap stone set sharpening the damn thing so many times(although I got real good at sharpening)

So I am in the market for a new EDC, I would like to keep the cost under $250 and need a fixed blade with great durability and in black. I have been searching for a while for a new blade and feel naked without one, I've attempted to carry a Buck that I have but its just too big:jerkit: so if you guys know of anything similar fixed blade not made in freaking Taiwan similar to the poor thing I destroyed let me know, maybe a bit longer blade but remember its got to stay EDC!

Here's what it needs to be:
Fixed
Black(or dark, cant stand bright shiny knives)
Tough
Good edge retention
about a 4" blade
Easy to carry
Tough
Not made in Taiwan
Tough

Thanks guys,
Floyd

Any RAT will do. If you have to have a 4" blade then the RC4 of course, but I believe an Izula would do you just fine and you can get both for well under $250. Heck you can get an RC4 and three Izulas for that kinda cheese. The RC3 is probably more what you would want after handling them though. Come on get the bug, if anything give the Izula a try. And don't worry any RAT you buy and don't like you can just give to me.

How about a Busse or Scrapyard.

The Busse Active Duty or Meaner Street are great EDC Knives and have a lifetime guarentee.

The Scrapyard Street Scrapper 4 is a good knife too, but hard to find or even the Mud Puppy LE.

A great 5" knife is the Scrapyard Dumpster Mutt or even the Scrapper 5.

Great!! Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I have not looked at all that you recommended but before even posting this there were two names that stuck out in my head and they were Busse Knives and RAT Cutlery, I love the way that RAT's look and am going to keep looking at all your suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions again guys.

Now its between the RAT knives and Scrap Yard Knives, those Scrap Yard knives are awesome by the way.

Thanks,
Floyd

Hey Floyd, are you going to the Socorro Appleseed shoot this weekend?

Nah, I'm not going to be able to make it to the shoot, I still need to get a bunch of stuff, I will be at the shoot in Dec. Though I was still trying to get to the Cruces shoot next week but I need a knife and another sharpening system more than marksmanship training. You going to the shoot this weekend Easy?

Oh and btw, I think I might end up going with a Scrapyard blade, the Busse name and warranty swayed my initial desire for a RAT blade. Any thoughts on this guys?

Thanks,
Floyd

Hey Floyd, are you going to the Socorro Appleseed shoot this weekend?

I'm sorry that I didn't didn't reply sooner but I just got back from the Appleseed shoot in Socoro. I guess that answers your question.

BTW: I'm BobABQ over there.

Difference between RAT and Scrapyard. You will actually find RAT knives. They are production knives that are tough as nails. I just recently acquired a ScrapYard Scrapper 6 and really like it but its huge. Its my first really big fixed blade and I really like it, but definitely not an EDC. Both companies have amazing warranties as if you will need them but the ScrapYards are limited production and what you find will be second hand. If you can find a small scrapyard you will like it and if not just like the RAT just give it to me. If it was me I would just start with the Izula. Small necker with a great edge, good sheath all for under $50. Go to the RAT forum and check it out. That's why its there.
