Another Interesting Strangeness

I have bought several Buck 310 from Bass Pro. They come in a wooden slide lid box. The outer box is plain brown with a couple of stickers stuck on it.
On sale you can get them for about $19.00 and change.I have them with lids
that are marked 100years and Buck knives. In 2002 or 2003 Bass Pro also released a 303 in a wooded slid lid box.

Does anyone know if these were contracts through Camillus?

I know that some models were done after teh main 4 were brought inhouse for SMKW.

Would this be any help,[book]Blade's guide to knives&their values, edited by Steve Shackeford. Buck Folding knivies,pages510-511

OR maybe too:Knife world Vol.26 No.1 January 2000 Buck 300 Series by Larry Oden

Not sure about the knife world article, the Blade book I have read and I don;t think it gives details about the contract knives that were done in limited runs after the 80's.

WhenI called Buck about a limited special order once, I got the impression that they don't keep really detailed records from the old days.

These just make me curious, I "think" the 310 was always a contract knife from Camillus, but the one on Ebay that started this discussion has a coping blade wit the Idaho stamp, were as the one on Bass Pro Shop site, does not show the Idaho stamp on the coping blade.....just another odd little knife mystery! :D

The 310 was definitely made by Buck. It was introduced at the same time as the 312 and the 314 somewhere around 1988 or 9. It was never made by Camillus. It is my understanding that these three knives were introduced to offset the discontinuation of the Cami knives around this time. Note that all the Cami knives in the original set had odd numbers, 301, 303, 305 etc. Cami didn’t make any even numbered knives until the ersatz Bucks made for Smoky Mountain mostly around 1999, 2000.

THANKS!, that helps sort out some of the 300's better!

:foot: Well, I can't say it's the first time I paid too much for something, :foot: nor will it be the last.:p

Anyhow, the box is the plain no logo greyish type. The label reads "wood case w/logo" so that doesn't necessarily match the 100 year wood box. "0310-SP1-0" is the model. Blacked out with a marker the date "3-28-05" and the catalog number "CAT. 9261". Some of the pictures in the item description on eBay are, or could be the same knife, while others are not.

With the seller's ID being "thug88" I guess I should consider myself lucky! At least I got my overpriced knife. :) I've sure had worse experiences with other sellers. :barf:

Since I was a poster in this thread I will respond to your post JL.

My response is, I am a little confused about your question , especially as it relates to such and old thread. Chuck Reed in post #24 lists some reference materials. Is this the book you are asking a question about ?

At first I thought you had made a mistake in pulling up an old thread. You will need to explain to receive fruther help.

I got to this thread late but I have seen Buck 310s listed on the bay with 309 blades. I don't think this is as uncommon as some might think. I bought a 310 in both a cardboard box and in the wooden slide top box. This is as "from the factory" as you can get and it has a 309 blade. At first I was disappointed but after thinking about it, I like oddities. I have a 3 bladed 309, or a 309 bladed 310. What ever. They are out there in mass quantities. so they aren't rare but could be collectable, if your into oddities.

I was looking for a 310 with a 310 blade in the wood box from Bass Pro. I went to 2 different Bass Pro's and managed to get the sales person to let me look at them. Every 310 at 2 different Bass Pro stores had a 309 blade.
