Here's a 10/10 Malla by KNN -- 18 inches and 24 ounces. The only thing I can find wrong with this entire rig is some minor rust damage on the big blade. I figure 15 minutes with some sandpaper will bring it to perfect. Good karda and chakma. Scabbard and frog very well done by village sarki in new leather.

This rig is worth more but Pala said let it go for $95.

Call or email if interested.

Great!

This is all Wal's fault by the way. If he hadn't of talked up the Mallas so much yesterday I probably, may not have, at least would have thougt twice about making this pruchase. :p :D

CoalBlack, I'll make the same request of you that I made of Roger - After you've held your Malla a few moments, put it down ( ) and post your first-word impression. First word that comes to mind. There have been many posts about these knives "talking" to you. This knife, and one other, made the same clear, unmistakeable statemnet to me when I first handled them. They are different length, weight and blade shape, but say the same thing. I'm interested in the comparison of impressions ;)

The blade descriptions, throughout the FAQ and the HI site, all lend an air to the blades and their uses. Maybe the story of the Malla set me up for it. An old, old blade, tucked away under a floor slab as for use at a later day when events would again make it necessary....the only blade this man had to hide away, or the choice of a fighter who had to go in the wind, and intended to come back for his chosen battle blade? The WWII is "the best combination of tool and weapon", the Sirupati is "the choice of martial artists". The GS and the M43 only say "weapon" to me, in different tones, but the Malla says it loudest, and most decisively. All of the Khuks will cut your wood, crops, vines, brush and grasses. The Malla, GS and M43 say "we will do these things when we must, but we are waiting for a FIGHT!! That is the one-word message I got from these three, but strongest from the Malla.

I know exactly what your talking about Wal. I felt it just yesterday in the Sanu made, Chiruwa AK after I picked it up from the post office. No BS, the first word that came into my mind to describe the feeling I got from this blade was "Implacable", which is odd because it's a word that I wouldn't normally use. In fact I had to look it up to be sure of it's meaning.

Kind of spooky.

In what sense of 'implacable'? 'Not able to be appeased'?? Sort of like 'staunch' perhaps?

Yes that's it. Or at least a part of it because there is also a sense of fierce determination as well. There is definately something grimm about this blade.

Probably just an overactive imagination which has been overfed with one two many fantasy novels. How do you think I came up with "Loremaster"? ;) :)

:D :D :D I like 'grim' - good Anglo-Saxon word sometimes used for describing swords, I believe. I certainly get the 'determination' feeling from all of my HIs - I'll have to try Walosi's 'feel'-test and see what else I get...

cheers, B.

People name their cars, don't they? ;)

Naming swords and referring to them by name certainly occured in mediaeval times. Whether it's that some objects really do possess 'spirits' or that we project onto them, it seems that we tend at least to 'anthropomorphise' finely-crafted tools, like khukuris....

And I was struck by 'Loremaster' because of doing too much Anglo-Saxon recently! :p I finally finished off my 'commissioned' Beowulf readings (see http://www.jagular.com/beowulf/benslade.shtml ) - good thing too because I find that I'm beginning to break into alliteration in my posts ;) (cast an eye over some of my recent ones and you might recognise this) :p

The single word used most in field report emails I receive is "awesome" but I think that's just a vogue word for the present and will be replaced by another with time -- if it hasn't been already.

In it's original sense, not meaning 'cool'; but rather 'inspiring awe', I think that's not too bad either...
