Naming swords and referring to them by name certainly occured in mediaeval times. Whether it's that some objects really do possess 'spirits' or that we project onto them, it seems that we tend at least to 'anthropomorphise' finely-crafted tools, like khukuris....

Don't forget the more recent historical precedents between man and weapon/machine. Think of all the bomber and fighter crews since the invention of the airplane who named thier aircraft or personalized it in some way. Even ships, to this day, are given nicknames by thier crews. Such has it always been and probably always will be. I think in a way it's the human means of extending trust, even faith, to an inanimate object.
