Jumping in here. I'm wanting to build a grinder and start making knives. I only have 110v to the garage. If I understand things correctly, I can get a vfd for $110 and a 3 phase motor for another $100 and some to run off my 110v. Can someone suggest a vfd on ebay and which motor and where to get it?

I bought two motors from automation direct.
They both work great.
The vfd I bought was from factorymation and the model was the teco fm50.
I think there are cheaper ones on ebay, but I wanted to use something the others on this forum had purchased and vouched for.
I'm very happy so far with both motors and vfd.

Hmm. A pricey option for the vfd. I'm trying to go cheaper. Which motors did you get?

The ironhorse 3 phase 1750rpm.
2hp, had a buddy of mine install 220
I set up a disc grinder, vfd, and motor for my kmg for like $450. Made an enclosure for the vfd based on some of the other guys on here that did it. Its just a toolbox with air filters to keep the dust out.

For running on 110...biggest you can run is 1.5 hp 3 phase. Look for tefc 1750 rpm and get the mount type to match your need.

For the one in the link you provided, I believe you'll need 220 in your garage. Do you know an electrician?
Are you building a direct drive grinder or kmg style (belt and pulleys)? I would recommend a direct drive.

Please don't limit your options based on what I say.
I think you'll be disappointed with 1 hp on a belt drive grinder.
If you can get help from an electrician to get more power to your workspace it will give you more options. You don't want to drop a couple hundred bucks on a vfd and motor and "outgrow" it in a year.
If you do a little more research by using the custom search engine

You'll see more options.
There are some threads on people using 1hp on a direct drive grinder and they seem content.
I started with 1hp on my kmg and it was underpowered.

If I go with a vfd I am assuming it would be direct drive. Maybe there is an option for 110v, a vfd and 1 1/2.

I dont have a buddy electrician but I do know one. I'm guessing it would be $500 or so to run 220 but I could check.

Direct drive is where the motor is connected to the drive wheel. Examples are the Pheer, Esteem, TW-90.
If you are planning to build a kmg clone, there are pulleys and a v-belt.
Take your time and research this stuff.
The grinder is probably your most important tool. Plan it out and read read read. Keep asking questions like you're doing.

P.s. I don't know how much electricians normally charge, but i went with my buddy to the store to get the stuff, bought him lunch, made him a knife, and gave him some steel to make his own if he wanted to. I helped with whatever he needed during install and that was that.
