IDLEDALE, Colorado - A mountain lion crept through an open door into a
house outside Denver, snatched a Labrador retriever from a bedroom where two
people were sleeping and left the dog's dead body outside, wildlife managers
said Tuesday.

No one else was hurt in the home about 14 miles southwest of Denver.

Wildlife officials later trapped the 130-pound male cat using the dog's body
as bait and fatally shot it.

Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Tyler Baskfield said the cat entered
the house through open French doors early Monday and fled with the Labrador
after the owners woke up.

"The people got up and looked around and saw the mountain lion's tail
leaving the house," Baskfield said.

Mack and Jacquie Anderson told Denver television stations that their
12-year-old Labrador named Scout was killed by the lion. Another dog
sleeping in the room wasn't harmed.

Jacquie Anderson said they were awakened by a commotion in the room at
around 4:30 a.m. and, when she got up to check what was happening, she
realized the big cat was in the bedroom. She exclaimed that there was a
mountain lion in the room and she believes that led it to run out the open
doors with Scout in its mouth. The dog weighed 72 pounds.

The couple said the dogs didn't bark to warn them of the mountain lion.

The owners agreed to use the dog's body for bait. Baskfield said mountain
lions often stash their kills and return for them later.

Although wild animals ranging from raccoons to bears might amble in through
open doors and windows, "it is kind of strange for a large predator like
that to come that close to the house," Baskfield said.

Colorado has an estimated 3,000 to 7,000 mountain lions.

Poor dog man...I like Labradors..good dogs. 12 years old..good thing it wasnt a 72 lb., 12 year old, little girl...or boy. That is freaky that it came right in their house...seems kinda strange.
I would guess that is a very good thing they got it...if it was over the fear of humans and their homes..it wouldnt have been long before it started chomping on sleeping people.

Poor dog, I've got a lab and she'd probably try and play with a mountain lion if it came into the house :)

Who sleeps with doors open?

:grumpy: This is about a mile from my house. You might recall Mark Reynolds was killed in the same area 4 or 5 years ago. And they just reopened the park after being closed for the last 10 months from the fires last fall.

PORTOLA HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- A hiker was injured by a mountain lion after petting one of three cubs near Portola Hills in Orange County.
It happened when the hiker was out for a walk and came across three mountain lion cubs. Allegedly, even though the man knew the mother mountain lion was nearby, he pet one of the cubs. That's when the mountain lion lunged at the man and scratched him.
The man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Authorities are now looking for the mountain lion and the cubs.

i dont leave my doors unlocked let alone open.

feel bad for the dog but like you guys said, better a dog than one of your kids or you wife or yourself.

glad they dont live near me.

you cant trust cats.

About four years ago here Iguassu Falls a cougar snatched and killed a small child. The animal had gotten accustomed to killing racoon type animals (called Coatis who live in large bands) around visitors in the National Park. After a while the cougar got so used to being around people that it attacked a little girl who was playing in her backyard. She was a Forest Ranger's daughter and lived in the National Park. I have seen one quite tame cougar prowling around as well. All the big cats here, Jaguars and Cougars, just love dogs. After they kill one they get a taste for them. One Jaguar many years ago killed ALL of the dogs living in the National Park. I personally have documented three attacks by jaguars on people. Although that is in a 35 year time frame. Jaguars can weigh up to 200 pounds and unlike 200 pound humans it is mostly muscle, not fat. The puma always goes for the throat while a jaguar always tries to puncture the skull. Sleep tight.

So my man decides to pet one of the cubs in the wild KNOWING the mother is near by. He is lucky to get a way with a scratch.

Wow, at what point did that seem like a good idea ?...

EDIT...glad I'm not the only who got a kick out of that.

Cool, I learned something new today.

I would like to know how the dogs didn't know something was in the house. Every dog I've met knew I was there the second I was at the door, and I'm nowhere near as threatening as a cougar. To the idjit who pet the cub: D'UH.

Your nowhere as sneaky as a cougar either:D. Stalk mode... he'll go through your underware draw and you'll have no idea.

This would definitely be inadvisable, but I swear if I saw this incident and it was my dog, I'd go after that cat with my bare hands if need be, even if I knew my dog was already dead.

We have an itinerant cougar who is videotaped every year here in Delaware. It's usually in a back yard when spotted, and there have been several deer kills found inside Dupont sites.

Fortunately, this area is brimming with lots of mouth watering game, and Delawareans long ago abandoned the practice of sleeping outdoors with pork chops around our necks.

But STILL, we close our doors, just as a precaution! I mean, doesn't Colorado have its share of 'scape gallows and ne'er-do-wells, too?

The infamous Delawawe cougar. Every year a photo pops up in the News Journal and everyone trys to say it's a big house cat....
I wonder if anyone will ever get a good pic of it. It's like having our very own Sasquatch.

THis happened not too far from the Metro area and has people freaked out!

'Cept some foron at work telling me that if he came across a 130# Cougar in his house he'd "Take care of it"...I asked how, did he have a gun? "No, I'd just grab it and throw it out a window, or stab it if I had to."

I asked him if he had a dog...he said yes a 90# Lab. I asked him if he could successfully wrestle the Lab...(this guy is mabe a buck fifty soaking wet) he said "Sometimes".

Then I made the point that the cougar was bigger, stronger, faster, more motivated better armed etc. he got real quiet.

Alex, I would love to hear more of your jaguar information. You can e-mail me if you'd like.

I remember that. I live in Silverado Canyon Area and I have seen Mountain Lions on the hill behind my house. Our property backs up to Cleveland National Forest. My wife wonders why I carry a Glock to take the trash out after dark. One night I walked out the back door and a Bobcat was 6 feet from my back door. Just looked at me and slowly moved back.

It's dangerous out there.

I know some folks in Auroura Colorado, open windows or doors are because lack of Air condition...I thought I was going to burn up staying the weekend with 'em,I slept in the bed of my truck,it was much cooler...just my opinion ?
