Hello to all, I have yet to get to know many others here personally so I thought I'd Change my user name before things get too confusing. Formerly JAD I'll be going by my actual name from here on out Josh Dabney.

I've been lurking here for some time soaking it all in and learning everything I could learn from the good folks here at bladeforums. I'm am a noobie- guilty as charged, and got a knifemakers membership for the convenience of searching the forums to find as many answers to my questions on my own.

I have yet to ask any questions but won't hesitate to do so once I begin "putting the steel to the wheel". Without rushing into things I believe I'm way ahead of the game in that I've found myself one hell of a mentor within 10 miles of home. Huge thanks out to Dave Cole (DCknives) and his lovely wife for welcoming me into their home and shop !!!!! Having left that experience with a fire lit under my rear to get my own shop up and running I'm getting together the last few items needed A.S.A.P.

To other noobies... This may be beating a dead horse but contact an experienced maker, local or not, and do whatever you need to do to visit them at their shop. I believe that in one visit to Daves I found a mentor and a friend for life and gained a small part of his wisdom that would probably have taken me 3 or 5 or who knows how many years too figure out for myself.

Hi Josh.I think everything you have done thus far is a good move on your part.As far as the local mentor, you could'nt have found a nicer guy in Dave Cole. You will learn much from him, both in making knives and sheaths. He is a very talented and skilled individual, as well as one hell of a nice guy.

John,
Boy I just couldn't agree more about Dave ! My SHORT visit at his place quickly became 7 hours in a blink of an eye. In just this one visit I got to experience more in the way of handmade knives, sheaths, and tools of the trade than I could imagine. For a complete rookie in this field to have the oppertunity to get some hands on with a variety of makers work such as your self and Sandy Morrissey and Dave among others was an experience never to be forgotten !
Pictures are all we have sometimes but they are no substitute for holding something in your hand. Seeing and feeling the textures for yourself and understanding the craftsmanship involved in creating such amazing objects from raw materials is something that I feel kind of falls on blind eyes for noobies who have never had the pleasure of handling creations of truly talented hands.
I do feel very very fortunate to have met such a fine person and truly hope that I can return the favor someday.

Josh,

Welcome aboard, and good luck in your knifemaking adventure! Sounds like you have found a very nice person to help you along the way.
