I was watching another episode of Man vs. Wild where bear was in North Africa. He was using a fixed blade knife that was black coated. It looked like a Cold Steel SRK. Anyone know what knife he was using?

Yes, he sleeps in lodges, etc - and carries a satelite phone - and makes a bit much of some of his on-TV exploits (Alabama was a hoot - and a stretch!). But, he really did climb Everest - and even top it in a powered hang glider. He broke his back in a fall while in the Brit's armed forces - and he still jumps. He circumnavigated the British Isles in a kayak. He really climbs stupid things (So does his cameraman!), eat rididiculous stuff - and drink elephant dung squeezings. Above all, he is entertaining.

Grylls does have two of the knives he carries made by the Brit custom knife maker 'Bailey's' - a bit pricey - ~$700+ by the time you get them here. I like Les Stroud, the Canadian aka 'Survivorman', much better. He is the real deal - even carries/sets up his own camera equipment. He stays for a week - gives decent examples/instructions. He likes multi-tools - and the Buck 119 'Special', a classic that is ~$34 at WallyWorld. Unlike Grylls, I only saw Stroud drink his own pee once - and then after he distilled it! He retired last year to spend more time with his wife and kids - off the grid, of course.

I'd like to know more about Grylls' latest knife, too.

What's that new one coming out in June on Discovery? "Dual Survival" or something like it.

June 11th on Discovery channel is Dual survivals premier.

Should be a FAR better and more accurate show.

I agree, I loved the one where he fell asleep in a hollowed out log and woke up after setting his log on fire. He had moved the fire almost inside the log. That is the mark of a true professional. Especially the part where he admitted that it had happened to him before...

I think hes fun to watch, and i also think its a good show.

If i wanted to watch a guy PROVE to the world hes actually surviving, i'd watch that crappy survivor man show.

In theory anyone cold watching street vagrants, they do it everyday without the benefit of expensive production teams and self immolation.

I take the detractors' criticisms with the same grain of salt I prescribe for Grylls' claims. I know his secret... he is the quintessential showman. Besides, like most of the armchair travellers here, I'll never see K2 - except in HD - from my favorite recliner. Heck, I feel accomplished when I conquer a few flights of stairs without oxygen!

I enjoyed Stroud's show with the teens stranded in the woods after a bus wreck. It's episodes seemed to just stop, however. The kid's channel it was on just seemed to drop it before it finished - anyone know why - or what happened?

I love the hypothetical 'survivor' scenarios we watch - and envision. The choice of the proper bladed device for such a scenario is a great topic. I especially appreciated the mindset needed for survival - perhaps the most important lesson. A personal story from a few years back - at a then recently opened WallyWorld where - two young gang-thugs cornered me in the back of the store - demonstrates the survivor mentality one needs. Of course, I don't recall which knife I had in my pocket that day. It was the revolver in my pocket that helped - but that is a topic for another forum.

That looks like a Gerber LMF II in Grylls' hand - is a Prodigy similar? I received an LMF II as a gift - I think it's in one of my urban 'bug out bags' I've secreted somewhere in my home. I may rethink that now! His Bayley knives were neat... just not that neat!

Stroud is more realistic - setting his lair alight - severely cutting his finger in the jungle with his multi-tool - using a Buck 119. I miss his shows.

While Man vs. Wild or Suvivor, some seem so... fake, ridicioules and over the top... I still have to give 'em compliment. They're in the wold, doing stuff and they put their health in the line. Sure some of their antiques or how they do things won't work or plain idiotic but most of them do work.

They are in the wild, doing stuff, when I am most of the time sitting on office chair wishing I'd be out there... I am sure though that most of the host's of the show's still can outlast me in the wild, so can I really criticise them? After all, its been a decade last time I was in survival training. I need to go when possible for few day classes and resharpen my wilderness skills.

When it comes to Stroud, his episode with plane crash on arctic Canada... That made me nearly cry...

1. Man v. Wild is just a tv show. Nothing to get one's feathers ruffled over.

2. Bear Grylls has almost surely done more in his life (in terms of adventure and outdoor living), and can climb better, than all of us put together. So dissing him as a pretender just doesn't work.

3. I too own a Gerber Prodigy.

I have spoken. :)

Thats the show that made me realize what a joke he was!

I'm about 30 to 40 min from Little River Canyon, and swam over there for most of my life.
He gets out, acts lost(when there is a road all the way around canyon), acts like a small controlled burn is this huge natural fire with no way around it, kills a farm raised wild pig that was put in his trap, then the best one of all...
...He winds up in a swamp(seasonal backwater, lol) in NORTH AL that has 15' alligator in it:eek: :D
What a croc, there's no swap or gators anywhere near there! Our huge swamp down in south GA doesn't even have 15' gators.

At least he did get arrested for jumping on the back of that semi:thumbup:
