I've noticed that a lot of the custom makers seem to be making a version of these small camp axes nowdays. Stomper ( JK Knives ) makes a real nice one as does G L Drew. Even Scott Gossman has given in to temptation and produced one !!!
Anyway I noticed that Matt of ML knives had put pics up of this one he has just completed for a custom order and thought you might like to see it.....

A little custom camp axe is definitely on my list of things to get, unfortunately my list is long and my funds are short......one day though !!!!!

Looks like a Blast to use

Yeah I'm quite suprised we don't see more people on the forum with them. I'd imagine that with a decent edge they could do most tasks from skinning an animal to cutting up the meat and/or vegetables, making fuzz sticks, splitting kindling, chopping wood for shelters and at 1/4" thick still have the rigidity for prying out sections of fatwood etc !!!

I opted for a Khukri, but a small ake is another way to go, great for chopping and a skilled user could do a lot of tasks with them.

I have one of JK's custom axes, Very useful camp tool, I just need more time in the woods.

Here is the JK ax along with the Hiker and Hiker Backup by Stomper The handle on the Ax is his Red Micarta.

Pit dog you are correct these little hatchets can do just like you said. I think a hatchet and knife just seem to go together. I just love mine.
That one from ML looks like a neat one.

Hey sorry Bryan I had forgot that you had made some as well, yours were some of the first as well....made me feel bad now !:o

How much do those snatchets go for? I have a little greco hatchet thats pretty cool you guys should check his site out.

Hey pit, that one from Matt is really nice. I have to admit I'm not really a hatchet user. I've had requests in the past and figured I'd add one to my line up. After Estela and company used my original design at WLC, they gave me a few alterations and now I have a second model along with the original that will be available. I have been using the original and really have grown fond of it. Hatchets certainly won't replace the duties of a full size axe, but they do come in handy.
I still prefer a large fixed blade over a hatchet.

Hi all,

Pit do not feel bad LOL. Hatchets are just a cool tool to use. But if you are not use to using them they are kind of not the eastest tool to use.
Since a knife is what most people use even a longer knife is easyer than a hatchet for most jobs. I mean I really use mine for chopping wood up not much for cutting fish or bread stuff like that. I know that my hatchet can do it but I like using my knife more LOL.

Hey Bryan how do ya find that knife/hatchet works, I actually drew up some designs similar to that a short time back.
If the blade sloped back from the back portion of the blade to the handle junction at a nice radius then that section could be used as a draw knife as well ! Does that make sense ?

Hi pit, yes that makes sence. This design was from another forum member and is to his specs. Do you have a pic of that drawing that you mentioned?
