Another nut planning on making a knife

My concern over you belt list now changes to the price listed. 40 belts for $49 seems like they must be rather low quality belts. What size belts are they? Even aluminum oxide 2X42" belts cost about $3 each. Some top grade 2X72" ceramic belts can cost $10 each. The Zirconium belts run $5-7 each in 2X72".

On the Grizzly website- H9546 2" x 27" Aluminum Oxide Sanding Belt, 60 Grit, 10 pk.

If they are not good quality then I'm happy to look elsewhere.

Update- I have found a workbench and drill press on craigslist so I'm off to a good start saving money (and getting started!).

Question about steel...I want my knives to be in S3V and/or CPM 154 but want to be able to practice my grinds on cheaper steels. What cheap steel would you recommend I buy to practice on that would give me similar feedback to S3V/CPM 154 during the grinding process?

Thanks again for your help!

Update: My budget is going to be blown out of the water with approval from my lovely wife. At the end of next month I'll put in an order for the KMG and then will have the rest of my gear by the end of April...can't wait!

Question about grinding the edge: What tool do you use to draw a line on the steel in order to center the grind on the edge?

Looks like you are going to get a KMG instead of the Grizzly. Wish I could have done that.

I'd be wary of the belts from Grizzly. The ones that came with my 5015 grinder didn't hold up very well on metal, on wood they ok but not great. If you get a Grizzly, get rid of the soft graphite (?) platen liner and replace it with a ceramic one.

The Dremel may not be a necessity. Most of the things you can do with hand tools, but it takes more patience. If you do get a Dremel type tool, get a variable speed. I had a one speed one that didn't get used much because it ran too fast (25K rpm). I finally found a Foredom Flex shaft tool at a garage sale which I find very useful and gives me more control than my Dremel.

Don't forget a couple of clamps.

I wanted to check in with you guys and verify that I’m ordering the things I should for the price I want to spend on a KMG set up (around $2000). I’m about 2 weeks from ordering this thing and am so excited! Here’s what I’m thinking:

2 HP Set Up w/10” Wheel (includes motor, grinder/motor pulleys, driver belt, base plate) $2028
Steel Tooling Arm- $80
$2108

Am I missing anything important for my initial grinder set up?

Thanks for your help!
