This is the THIRD one of these I have had split after using it! I only used this one once. Got home, cleaned it, put it up. Got it out of the bottle carrier today, where it was stored around a stainless steel Nalgene, and it has started cracking:

Anyone else have problems with these? The other two continued cracking until being useless. I'm going to toss this one too, before I cut my lip on it. I'll be using a Snowpeak Ti cup for now, but it doesn't fit as well. What brand stainless cup is everyone else using?

i use a gsi one as well. for about 3 years now i've had it and its never split.

No seam, construction looks identical to the GSI cups a local retailer stocks, except the Oilcamp has oz graduations on the side. I'll pick one up and see if it holds up better.

I use a Snow Peak Mini Solo and love it.

I ordered one of these on Friday based on your previous post :thumbup:

I have a GSI cup (or I assume so, now that I think of it I can't really remember the brand) and have had no issues, can't even see any seem like that in the cup I use.

That's the strange thing, there isn't a seam on this cup either. I don't know what is causing the crack.

thats a stress fracture. When they form those cups they cold stamp them from a sheet of SS. Its an extremely rapid process, and can stress the metal. Add in hot/cold cycles and the end user stage and the metal goes "crack"

Brother "Fish", I've got several of cups cracked in the same manner,(2 in the exact same place as yours) and am facing the same issue with replacing them. Everyone has said the GSI is better so I'm going that route. I've got a TI solo kit but dont carry it..It MAY be tough but it just feel "fragile" and I like hard core gear. I hope you find something..the fact that the Olicamps keep breaking in a real bummer!!! best of luck, Anrkst

hey fish - that sucks. But doesn't surprise me, I've been waiting for that to go one mine too. they just feel dang flimsy - period. i've never been wild about those cheesy folding handles, too. may i suggest a baked enamel metal cup? the rigid handle on my enamle cups don't cause any problems in my packs. just a thought...

I've had one for a long time but not splitting. One of the handles keeps coming loose though.

I have had a few "seamless" things that started cracking on what seemed to be a seam that was polished out.

I have three of the Olicups, but I'm pretty sure I've only ever used one of them directly over an Esbit stove once or twice for boiling water... usually they just get filled with boiling water for coffee or tea.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with them. I just bought their one-quart pot set. The quality doesn't seem to be great. No defects I can identify or anything like that, but I just thought the fit and spot-welding of the handle parts look a bit sketchy.

Here's a Olicup review I found online:

Customer Reviews My Cup Leaked... Date submitted:(2008-06-26)

I recently purchased an Olicamp Space Saver Cup through a reputable internet dealer. Unfortunately, the cup I received was defective in that the measure marks on the inside of the cup were stamped too deep during the manufacturing process. This caused the metal to split at the mark indentations, and resulted in pin-hole leaks when the cup was filled with liquid. In essence, the cup was a very good imitation of a dribble glass. There was no way to know the cup would not properly hold liquids until it was filled.

The cup is probably drawn from a sheet of stainless. As the steel is drawn by stages into a cup shape, it work hardens. If they don't anneal the metal back down to soft in between drawing, it will crack up.

If you have a buddy with a TIG welder, maybe he could gently fix the crack?

Or buy titanium Snow Peak stuff. That's what I did.
