Top of page 19 in the Feb 2007 Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalog:

Aparently burdered with an overstock of anniversary shields and tins, SMKW has attached the leftover shields to Taylor Old Timers and is packing them with an anniversary tin.

IMO, this is deceitful and dishonest. I wouldn't have a problem with them selling the tins and shields seperately as Schrade collectibles - heck, I'd of probably bought a couple. But by affixing the shields to irrelevent knives, they have crossed the line into forgery.

It's only a matter of minutes before these things hit eBay, so watch out!

Best Wishes,
-Bob

Also note the new tang stamp visible in the photo. The Chinese Old Timers that I've seen were only stamped "SCHRADE" in large block print. The new stamp clearly reads, "SCHRADE / HAND MADE."

Hand made, my ass.

That is unfortunate, the single line stamp "Schrade" was a good way to spot the imports, even in the bad pictures. Thanks for the heads-up.

It also appears that there are multiple handle materials available with these phony Anniversary knives. The print catalog photo clearly shows the typical sawcut brown plastic handles. But the online website photo looks like a smooth black plastic.

Thanks Bob, invaluable relevant info, much appreciated. Very dissapointing that they are doing this as the geniune Anniversary knives are likely to be worth alot oneday especially because sheilds are dated 1904 2004 which helps the novice determine authenticity and last date of manafacture. What a Shame.
Regards Tim

Interesting find Codger. That's different that either of the SMKW photos.

What makes the SMKW offering especially tricky is that they have the exact same tin and shield as the 'real' Old Timer knives from 2004. And SMKW isn't as blunt as that eBay seller as to the knives' source.

Collecting Schrades is going to be very tricky. 100th Anniversary knives coming from Taylor. . .there's a yiddish word for that -- Chutzpah.

Well that just makes me want to puke!!:barf:

At least the seller in Codger's link knows its Chinese and is going out of his way to make sure the buyer knows it too. Can't really fault him there.

Seller's return policy:
Return Policy Details: SALE IS FINAL

Yea, He is such a nice guy he deserves to get $33.99 plus for that. Not:thumbdn:

They've also been pushing cigar box clones, especially those tobacco leaf jobs. The only real giveaway is Taylor Brands in real small print in the corner of the box.

Here is the print ad, Chinese Taylor Old Timer knife, equipped and marketed with Schrade anniversary tin and shield.

Wouldn't it be difficult to distinguish this from an original, especially with the typical eBay-quality photography?

I know the current regular readers of the Schrade Collectors Forum probably wouldn't be fooled. But the best part about Blade Forums is that these topics are archived, providing excellent future reference material.

That knife is actually kinda weird maybe even a little stupid as the sheild in middle says 1904-2004 that clearly advertises and promotes knives made by Schrade USA during that time period which this knife is not. Its a disguised chinese dog with shades on the eyes and a sign on back that says "buy USA Schrades"

And check out the price. That's only a 66% markup from the current Taylor Old Timer prices, a 150% markup from the Rigid knock-offs, and is actually $4 higher than the original retail cost of a genuine Schrade 8OT.

-Bob

I agree I dont think they should be selling them at near the same price !!!

Part of this knife is an Authentic Schrade (the sheild). Perhaps I will buy one Dig out the shield from the knife throw the knife in the bin and put the shield in the nice tin to open and look at. Those shields really do look neat!!!

The price for the knife does make the shield a bit expensive.

Man am I glad I found this site. I surely would have fallen for it. Along the same lines.....I was looking at this earlier and contemplated purchasing it but I was scared off by the used under licence from Taylor Cutlery. Is this a new old stock or new new stock, if you will. I admit that my ignorance kept me from bidding. The seller has a good rep but I don't know them so I didn't bid. Thanks!

Marc,

I don't know where that knife is made, whether it's imported or sub-contracted to an American company. But it's licensed by Taylor, an import company, and not made by the Imperial-Schrade Corp.

Those plastic knife holders may be old-stock from Schrade though. I've seen them advertised as such anyway.

A search of the forum here should tell you more about those modern Schrade-Walden knives.

Timstools,
A agree those are cool banner shields, and the tins are very nice as well. But not worth $24 without a real Old Timer knife attached. The anniversary Old Timers are common on eBay, and you might be able to score one for not much more $$ than than the counterfeit. There was another Schrade Anniversary shield as well, an oval-shaped shield. And there were original Old Timer knives that had both the normal Old Timer shield and an anniversary shield, advertised as "Dual shield." Lots of varieties to be on the lookout for...

The Schrade-Walden knife you mentioned above, is made by Camillus, USA made, Info on this you will find elsewhere on this forum, If you look closely the writing on the card insert, actually states that the production was moved to camillus, there are several designs around, stockman, trapper, peanut, muskrat. I have a trapper which I bought about 2 years ago, not a bad knife.
