Another OLD TIMER sham. Beware!!

With Camillus facing difficult times, it might be a good collectible. But as a Camillus, not as a Schrade. :)

Everything I know is what I've read from the Camillus Forum section.

To Summarize:
Supplies of Becker knives have dried up. There was a strike - it's over now but only a few workers were hired back. There was a lawsuit between Camillus and Cold Steel, now settled but aparantly Camillus will make no more knives for them. And the factory is currently on a two-week shutdown.

This might be a bit off topic but I'm pissed and need to vent. I really like Uncle Henry 897's. I've been fortunate to pick up a couple in perfect shape for under 20 bucks.

Last week I saw another one on Ebay and snagged it for about 25. Fast forward to the day it arrives. Take it out and realize that, yes, it's made in China. I had read the ad 5 times and no where did it state that it was made in China/new production/Taylor, etc...

It really does look very similiar to the USA made but the handles are a bit thicker. BUT, it's MADE IN CHINA. Needless to say, I'm not too happy. But, I would rather throw it in the toolbox than go to all the trouble of mailing it back, getting credit and all the crap you have to go through.

The guy I got it from actually is a pretty reputable dealer on ebay. So I sent this email to him Friday. As of now, no response.

Just a note to let you know I received the knife. I was a bit surprised. No where in your ad did it state that this knife was made in China.
I have purchased 2 other 897's in the same condition that were made in the USA that were priced less than this knife. I guess I am a bit disappointed.
You might want to consider giving a bit more disclosure in your future listings concerning the origin of your product.
I will keep the knife as I don't want to go through the trouble of returning it. I will not leave negative feedback either.
I have just started collecting Schrade USA knives. I feel a bit of a kinship to a company that lost in the long run trying to do good business, rather than sell out to mass production, over good customer service.
Please consider that when you list items with the Schrade name on them. Schrade USA does not equate to Schrade China. Gerri

That is pretty lame and I think it's only going to get worse in the years to come as the good ones begin to dry up and Chi-Schrades flood the market.
I'm really skeptical if I can't see the USA stamped on the blade and it's not mentioned in the ad. Buyer Beware!!

Exactly. And I've never had a problem yet with asking ebay sellers to clarify exactly what the tang stamp reads. Naturally, part of the 'problem' is that many (most?) eBay sellers are not Knife People and don't understand the importance of the details - providing clear photos of stamps, accurately describing condition, or listing knives in the proper category.

For example, I recently bid on an Old Timer with a very fuzzy photo. But first I asked the seller to clarify exactly what the tang stamp read. During the process though, I first had to explain what is a "tang stamp." In the end I was out-bid by $1. But I'm confident that if the knife had been described more completely, it would have sold for perhaps $10 more than it did.

So while there may be some purposeful deceit by eBay sellers, I believe that most sellers accurately list their Chinese Schrades as "new production," "made in China," or at least mention "Taylor" in the ads. And a good portion of those who don't simply don't know the difference.

"Buyer beware" is exactly right.
