I just finished up my latest knife and my first attempt at a stacked leather handle. I used Cupples 1/8" 1080 with a 4" blade, 8" overall, stainless guard, spacers and nut, with red/black paper mycarta spacers. I ground the end of the tang down as close to round as I could freehand and used a #8 die to thread it.

I started with the washers larger than I needed and left myself more to remove than I should have.

As always any critiques or advice is welcome.
Thanks for looking,

I love stacked leather handles. That looks great. Did you grind all the excess handle material away? (on a belt grinder, that is) Aesthetically, it brings to mind one of the Falkniven NL knives. I really like it.

Thank you Perrin. Yes, I did grind the excess with a belt grinder (2x42 Craftsman). It took longer than one would think, the leather clogs the belts up pretty quickly. I finished it by hand sanding and "shoe shining" to remove the burnish left from the grinder.

Dig that leather stack.

Some questions if you don't mind?

Did you buy the leather rings from a supply house?

If not, where did you source the leather?

Is it important to use any specific kind? Say veg tanned vrs chrome tanned?

Did you dye them for contrast?

And finally, did you finish them with anything?

Super cool and very classic.

Thank you all for the kind words.

No, strig I did not buy the washers. I made them using scrap that I had left from making sheaths (Tandy leather) and I also sourced some scrap at a local saddle shop (Royal Oak I believe). I would be inclined to believe that one would need to use veg tanned leather. The same rules as to why we don't use chrome tanned leather for sheaths or holsters should apply here as well. No, I did not dye them. However, the stuff I sourced at the saddle shop was heavier and slightly darker so I did alternate the 2 types in the stack. It is kind of hard to see from the photos but the darker ring about mid handle is actually red/black/red paper mycarta spacers. I did apply 5 or 6 layers of teak oil on the handle. I am not quite happy with it and picked up some Tru oil today. Going to give that a shot.

Another note, I had read somewhere for a tighter fit to soak and compress the washers prior to installing on the tang. I drilled a 3/8" hole in all the washers, soaked them in hot water then stacked them on a 5 1/2" long bolt with over sized washers on either side. I tightened the nut down as much as I could and continued to do so twice a day for about a week. I compressed just over 2" out of the stack doing this and I literally had to cut the "block" apart to get the spacers added to the middle of the stack.

Very cleanly done classic right there. Kudos... That looks like a very useful/useable blade. Reminds me a lot of a hunter I carried for years before it got lost. But way cleaner and neater in your case.

Nice. I like that a lot...

Thanks fellas, it means something coming from guys in this group.

Since the photos I have used the Tru-Oil and I can say I am much happier with the finish on the leather now.

I like it. Not sure if I like the bolt head on the pommel.

Try looking in to a wax finish for the handle if you want it shiny
