another overnighter: mukluks and frozen feet.

Lt Dan said to carry extra socks! That movie is full of words of wisdom.
Minimum of three pair. And be certain they are wool.

One on your feet. One dry and ready in your pack.
One (washed and) drying (if necessary suspended around your neck and under at least the outer layer to dry in cold weather).
Learned that as a young infantryman a long time ago.

It might have been the author foreshadowing lt dan losing his legs but it's practical advice as well. Keep your hoofs clean and dry.

Spare socks?
Where were the spare outer sox!
Nothing polite to say

They are your insurance against frostbite
And you use them for gloves if you lose them in the snow

post #2 - i had two smartwool trekking socks. not sure about c-bone but i know he had knee-length wool socks but no spare wool liners for his mukluks...he told me a few days ago that he bought an extra wool liner and waterproof covering for it (galoshes?).

i usually bring two but bringing 3 like leghog suggested is even better...i can use the other as gloves like you said is a great idea.

I keep watching for Santa and his reindeer to cruise across the skyline in that picture of the lighted tent, snow, and smoke coming out of the chimney. It is a really nice picture.... magazine quality. It draws me like a moth to light.

Was wondering why you didn't "share" the warmth during the night? You're probably right about his ordering a wood stove. I like how you take these weekend jaunts out into your local woods and play. Certainly not exotic in a far away place, but always looks fun. You have your favorite spots and just seem to love to do it.

i thought he was sound asleep while i stayed up until 2 am i think just playing around with the wood stove - what can i say, fire mesmerizes me :D he certainly would've noticed my red light/headlamp turned on and moving here and there throughout the night if he got out of the hammock/under the tarp. also, that's why i spent most of the day light collecting firewood - to ensure warmth even in the worst case scenario. i think he was just shy to tell me and just wanted to tough it out and force himself to sleep through it.

a few days ago he went to campmor and went all out and spent the big bucks on a new hammock, a tarp that completely closes down around it and down underquilt so he says he's ready for round 2!

yup, it's all about playing for me and having a friend or two along is even better. i like to cook so most of the time my trips are centered around that...i even bring my soot-covered cup in the office so i can smell the camp fire every time i want :D
