my cousin from the philippines is here in the states for more military/eod training so he tagged along on my overnighter.

some really bright orange fungus/fungi.

not sure what packs they are issued over there but my kifaru zxr is a big step up i'm betting.

spam is back! :D

046_023.jpg

046_024.jpg

we even brought "daing" (salt-cured fish):D typical filipino food.

046_025.jpg

there's al qaeda and other domestic terrorists in the philippines so i'm sure he's been shot at/shot people before so this whole sleeping in the woods thing is pretty boring to him...he didn't have running water or electricity back in the province when he was growing up until high school.

046_026.jpg

...but he did get scared though when i told him about bears (the only dangerous animals in the philippines are snakes and crocs i think) and said this is what he'll do in case we encountered one. surprisingly, he's never heard of bear grylls! :D

046_027.jpg

our shelter setup.

046_028.jpg

he really did get scared of bears since he proceeded to gather dead fall and put up an early warning system around his shelter...me? i'm just hoping bears don't like spam and will leave me alone :p

046_029.jpg

anyway, i spotted this well camo'd frog.

046_030.jpg

dropped him on my tarp to get a better pic.

046_031.jpg

conveniently enough, a fly landed next to him for scale.

046_032.jpg

anyone know what this thing is? i'm sure i've seen mistwalker post about this one just can't remember what he said it was.

046_033.jpg

046_034.jpg

my esee lite machete with a new kydex sheath by godspeed.

046_035.jpg

wet weather was in the forecast so i decided to take the s1 again as my belt knife.

046_036.jpg

046_037.jpg

we even brought corn for the fire. he rolled his eyes when i told him i'm trying to keep my overnight pack weight below 20 lbs now...he wanted to show how tough he is so i was more than happy to let him carry most of the food - his pack weight was close to 50 lbs :p

046_038.jpg

046_039.jpg

white rice, spam, daing, tomatoes, and a day old pizza...that's pinoy-style camping! :D

the next day was colder so i decided to play with fire some more instead of leaving early.

046_043.jpg

046_044.jpg

i told him to setup his shelter first but forgot to tell him to take it down at the very last minute so he took it down way early.

046_045.jpg

i learned my lesson and left mine up...sure enough it started to rain down hard. he has far more woods time than me so i took this very rare opportunity and made fun of his newbie mistake as he scrambled to get all his gear under my tarp :D

046_046.jpg

pouring or not, i gotta have my fire-cooked spam for breakfast.

046_047.jpg

sure glad i brought a stainless knife on this trip.

046_048.jpg

what this pic doesn't show is it was still stupidly hot that day, even with the rain...i think i was sweating a gallon a minute that whole trip...can't wait for winter!

046_049.jpg

046_050.jpg

i still like snow the best but rain comes close - the woods is just so quiet and peaceful.

here are some random pics from my cousin's camera...me with my camera.

046_001.jpg

046_002.jpg

a group of hikers we came across that chatted with us for a bit. i guess my cousin just looks friendly...when i'm hiking most of the time other people try not to make any eye contact with me :D

046_003.jpg

046_004.jpg

on our way to another spot, i pulled over so my cousin can see a deer up close...i told him to take the back strap but apparently he even has a higher standard than me :p

046_005.jpg

the zxr is now replaced by the ku3700 as my main hiking pack...not once did i even think about exchanging packs with my cousin.

046_006.jpg

tons of these guys where we stayed overnight.

046_007.jpg

he said they just drink directly from the stream (filtered by a t-shirt if there are bugs floating) so he's never even heard of a water filter before...i was happy to let him filter all 8 liters then, haha.

046_008.jpg

daing.

046_009.jpg

i wonder how much weight did i save by shaving my head :D

046_010.jpg

son of a! i wonder what other pics he took of me while i was sleeping for future use.

046_011.jpg

despite the warm weather there were no mosquitoes so i skipped putting the bug net up.

046_012.jpg

this was the next day when it started to rain hard. i wish it started that night though, i probably would've slept all day.

046_013.jpg

a little water won't stop me.

046_014.jpg

046_015.jpg

anyway, that's my overnighter for this month.

Looks like a fun outing with a cool family member.

What is the orange handled machete?

Very cool pics. I bet your cousing is going to have some stories to tell when he gets back home.
Other than the rain in looks like you 2 had a fun trip.

Bryan

Love that terrain, and it's really cool that your cousin got to go with you:thumbup:

Nice on the Fowler's toad, I usually see them in the spring not fall. Great photos and thread!

thanks! that's the svord kiwi machete (l6 steel, 3 mm thick, 12" long).

thanks, bryan! he's seen the white house, pentagon memorial, nyc and all that touristy stuff last month but i told him this place for me is america - vast areas of forest where we can still see deer and other wild animals and streams where there's no trash floating :o i'm taking him to the appalachian trail next and hopefully some of that will rub off on him and influence others back home.

The mushroom in qestion is called Indian Pipe.

thanks!

Good stuff JV

Stop spamming us though ... m'kay :D

thanks! spam is survival food so never! haha. i'll bring some more weird food to you guys next outing :D

Awesome pics. Looks like a great time. Delaware water gap?

thanks! this was in ny...i live in nj but i don't hike here anymore.

Yeah thats Indian pipe alright, natives say it grows where wolves urinate.

thanks! i remember urinating in that general vicinity a few months ago :D

Looks like you guys had a great time. Thanks for sharing.

How'd the Svord do?

you're welcome! the svord wasn't used all that much on this trip (my cousin used the lite machete & mora heavily and i used the s1 most of the time) but was used heavily on my previous ones...i really like it and it's now my main machete if i don't have anything specific in mind...perfect balance between chopping ability, thickness and length for me. i'd still pick the lite machete though if i had to pick just one machete.

Nice pics man.

thanks!

Always like your post. Thanks for sharing .

thanks!

thanks, owen! most of the time i prefer to go solo but this time it's nice to have someone with me/actually walk in front of me so i can give scale to the terrain...and for once i didn't feel like sleeping with my machete on one side and my belt knife on the other side :D

Nice on the Fowler's toad, I usually see them in the spring not fall. Great photos and thread!

thanks, ken! once the sun went down they were all over by the water...i really should take my camera with me all the time...the camo on that toad was impressive! only reason i noticed it was because it jumped and landed near my shelter.

More great pics J, that is really a beautiful area you go to and nice you could share it with your cousin. Had to chuckle when I read your comment about sleeping with the machete and knife at your sides. I go through similar stuff when soloing. I guess being alone heightens your senses in terms of trying to prevent serious injury and keeping some means of defense within reach. I would have to have at least the netting over me to sleep well, you amaze me, but I guess spiders and creepy crawly critters don't bother you. I hate spiders, and the bites seem to take forever to heal. Looking forward to your next adventure.

Awesome pictures. It's great that you got to spend time with family. Thanks for sharing.
