another overnighter: the white rice episode.

Great thread and pics. I remember once when I (thought I) lost a magazine in the woods behind my house. I went and searched for that thing for hours. Turns out, I didn't actually lose it. I just placed it on top of the fridge when I walked in the door of my house.

Awesome thread and pictures! I guessed the gerber going in your foreshadow shot...I had a coghlan's die on me. They can be pretty easy to snap. If you have a pair of gloves, you can still functionally cut with just the blade in your hand though.

Interested in the exped downmat cover. I already punctured and repaired mine on an earlier trip. Do you inflate it first and then put the cover on? Does it add to bulk when packing?

Thanks

That multicam tarp really blends in well.

As always a great post and tons of awesome pics. Man I thought that spider was pretty dang big until you showed the comparison of it by your knife, lol Both yours and the camp site you found are really nice. You're lucky to have places like that at you disposal. How far do you have to travel to get to the woods you camp in? Because my luck is so 'great', the only two places I know of for that kind of camping around here are 4 and 5+ hours away:(

Awesome :D You should watch this video when you get a chance. Ray Mears has a neat trick to split logs using only a folding saw:

thanks for the vid! yeah, ray mears is awesome...i downloaded a bunch of his youtube vids and can't get tired of watching it including survivorman.

thanks, ken! i've tried both ways but i prefer to fully inflate the mat first before slipping the cover on. here's the package size - it's about 1" thick and weight is 260 g/9.2 oz. for me the ability to toss it in the washer every now and then is the main attraction since i can't do that with the mat itself. i get really dirty especially the 2nd night out without a shower :o and can't argue with that tactical pink case :D

exped says the bottom is made of the same material as their tent floor for increased puncture resistance. this video shows a separate carry sack but mine didn't come with that and the 2nd set of zippers too (although it was only $35 from campmor).

Great stuff buddy, love the pics !

thanks pitdog!

That multicam tarp really blends in well.

it really does! i did a side by side test with my multicam poncho and the bcusa 5'x7' coyote brown in snow and brown landscape and the multicam came out ahead too in my opinion. the pics start in post #4 in my january 2-nighter thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/919674-another-2-nighter-2-types-of-shelter-used

thanks! despite our firearm laws i am indeed lucky since there are a lot of places here i can hike and they're all within an hour away or two from home. the ones i frequent can be dangerous on the wallet though since there's an rei, campmor, ems, dick's, and 2 ramsey outdoors stores all within a few miles of each other

speaking of spiders, i saw this little hitch-hiker earlier today crawling out of my pack:

i've spoken with out of towners on the trails too and they say we have some of the nicest mountain bike trails too!

i very nearly ran over this black snake on the trail last fall with my bike:

jungle_habitat_snake_01.jpg

here i am trying to get her to move away since there's really no way around her in this part (bikers a few minutes behind us will either freak out when they see her and crash or worse, run her over).

couldn't help but stop and gather some bamboo while riding two summers ago:

the spyderco is my most used knife now (previously it was the lite machete but i haven't used it at all this year because of the emberlit). i'd like to see them make an orange g10 version or at least a sprint run...i'm just looking for an excuse to buy another one :)

Just look for one of the spalted maple 2nds. The maple is often brownish-orange in color.

I absolutely loathe moments like that.... !! We've all been there, sunglasses on the head scenario etc... I've done the same thing with a knife not long ago... drove me nuts, hours turned into days later I found it cleverly disguised as a knife laying right where I put it, out of harms way and camouflaged..

Jay, sad thing its the law biding citizens that are effected by the laws, criminals don't have any paper work and could care less whether the law states no FLAMETHROWERS...!!! :) also is your back tire bigger then the front or just me???

i saw your thread, you are very lucky to get that as a gift! i'd probably jump on those 2nds but owners seem to be keeping them.

they're both 26". however, my buddy has the trek 69er though, 29" front and 26" rear...it looks even weirder to me in person! i think it's discontinued since it never really caught on or just a one-off deal.

in my state which has the strictest firearms laws in the country? in my opinion, yes.

thanks! any other non-firearms related item and i would've brushed it off but a little background is in order to see where i'm coming from:

1. we have one of the strictest firearms laws in the country (1-gun a month, took me 3 months and numerous required references including my employer's contact info to get my firearms id card, a permit for each pistol i want to buy and it takes my pd normally a week or more to process an application, no hi-cap mags allowed, no flash suppressors, no collapsible stocks allowed, etc.).

2. even bb guns are considered a firearm here and requires a pistol permit. here's a 16-yr old who just got arrested a few days ago for a bb gun and will be charged with a possession of a weapon  http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2012/03/jersey_city_teen_arrested_afte.html

3. just filling up for gas on the way to the range is already a serious violation! there's a guy here who's currently serving a 10-yr sentence because he stopped-by his parents' house first on his way to his new apartment (he's moving into nj from out of state). his guns were locked in his trunk and unloaded, etc. anyway, i'm too lazy to dig up the posts from arfcom's nj hometown forum but it's been discussed in detail there.

4. retired police officers here can't even get a carry permit without some serious political connections.

5. even slingshots are illegal here.

i think that's enough details. this was a public place where target shooting is not allowed (bb gun or otherwise)...i live in an anti-gun state and they're just looking for any reason to completely take away our rights. that 3-month wait is long enough for anyone to get well acquainted with our laws and i'm directly affected by each owner's actions so i'm touchy when it comes to the subject.

let's step aside from the magazine in a moment...i have pics of the trash within a few ft of that as well (it wasn't there a week ago and this specific spot is way off-trail and well hidden from casual hikers which leads me to believe that it was the same person/group responsible for it). pm me for pics if you'd like to see it (i didn't post it here because others already know about garbage on the trails and don't want to remind them of that)...maybe i'm just sick and tired of picking up after these a-holes?

usually that blatant disregard for other hikers with regards to trash is indicative of how they are as a person. i've had my share of muzzle sweeps and dumbasses handling their guns during a cease-fire while we're down range setting up targets, i really don't want to worry about them in the woods too (where they're not allowed to carry guns to begin with in my state anyway).

...and thanks for keeping your reply civil :)

no problem sir. you have always seemed to be a down to earth guy when you post. Some folks just jump to conclusions. your explanation clears a lot of things up lol. I had no idea New Jersey was so strict. that is almost as bad as the communist countries. I'm very sorry to see a state go that route. thanks for the reply. I'll stop now before I get carried away lol (about the bs gun laws you made me aware of there)

Really nice bud. I found two ticks on me last week. I hate those little buggers !

Awesome :D You should watch this video when you get a chance. Ray Mears has a neat trick to split logs using only a folding saw:

EDIT: notice that Ray is using... a Bahco Laplander :)

If you rotate the stick 180 degrees from how he did it so the sawn part in the middle is facing down, it will split easier.

Yeah, those saws don't like to be pushed. I regard them as cutting on the pull stroke only. Thanks for the pics.

Really cool photos man, and the eats look good. I always look forward to your posts to see what you've been up to.

As always man, great photos and write up. Glad to hear the OPSEC poncho is working out for you. Nice rig you have there too. I have only been biking a year but started off with a Spec rock hopper sport comp 29. The bigger wheels also help me on the longer city rides, so it was a trade off. Great post again!

i'm usually down to earth, i don't like hammocks :p

thanks, man. i caught two ticks crawling up my pants that day and it was 75 deg f...on a side note, it dipped below freezing the other day! crazy weather.

you're welcome! i'll give that 180 deg trick a go next time...i ordered a bahco laplander as a replacement.

thanks, man! i never get sick of spam :p

thanks, man! i'm happy i saw your post about the opsec poncho - awesome piece of gear indeed!

yeah, i like to mix it up with mtb and road biking when i'm not hiking so i don't get too bored with either one. for city rides, ever tried using slick/hybrid tires? it makes a difference in pedal effort and you're not wearing out that soft compound (and expensive!) mtb tires too fast...but a road bike is a completely different feel - almost like riding a motorcycle how quickly you can gain speed, scary too! haha...sometimes i'll hike then ride the road bike so i get two different perspectives in the same exact area.

thanks, man! i never get sick of spam :p.

Lol, I can eat it again now...finally. I went through a fairly brief period where I thought I had eaten enough of it to last me the rest of my life lol, and I will have to be very VERY hungry before I eat it straight out of the can again...

People actually do that? I've eaten a lot of Spam, but I've never done that. That sounds nasty.

Spam is meant to be cooked, i can't fathom eating it straight out of can. Spam/Rice/Eggs/Ketchup breakfast of champions
