Yes, it's time once again to resurrect the good old petroleum jelly cotton ball tricks. Hmmm... maybe I'd better re-phrase that.... :D

Up until now, the easiest way that I've found to carry them is to turn a ziplock bag inside out, scoop out a bunch of vaseline, turn it back right-side out, throw in some cotton balls and knead. Keeps your hands clean. I know some of you like 35mm film containers, and I've also taken straws from 7-11 and stayed up late with a candle and a pair of pliers...

Here's a clever idea (that's not mine) that I got either from this forum or ETS, can't remember which. A lot of people use duct tape as a base for pitch pine shavings, keeps them from blowing in the wind, and it's flammable also. Then someone suggested putting a pjcb in duct tape. Keeps it ready for use and is waterproof. Plus, it packs cleanly and is nice and small. You can stage these all over the place in your pack, and they weigh next to nothing.

Simply cut an X into it, pull out some and fluff, and hit it with a ferro rod. This burned for over 4 minutes, and the base of the duct tape was still cool enough that I could pick it up and carry it around while burning. I didn't get a great picture here, it burned very well.

What do you think?

Great idea! I didn't realize the duct tape would serve as fuel also.

I like it. Forward thinking is never a bad thing.

That said, I really like my firestraws. They tuck in great in a lot of places and are just my preference. I'm sure the duct tape method would work just as well.

Really like that duct tape idea!
I never actually used pjcb's but this is too good an idea to pass up.
Might try to set it up with other tinders too, like a second stage tinder, tight rolls of birch bark and fatwood splinters, all in neat little duct tape bundles.

I did something like that for a spy capsule that I put into the end of a tomahawk handle. I shape it into a cone (filled with PCB, magnesium and some fatwood shavings), so it is easier to strike with a firesteel.

Good call, I've never posted it before!

Good idea, but I just keep mine in capsules.

Half a PJCB in a nitro pill fob on my keychain.

A full PJCB in a spycapsule that has made into a handle for a firesteel.

i've taken to carrying a small tin of PJ in addition to PJCB. One can slather PJ all over wet wood or dip cattail heads into it.....

Cool idea. Yesterday I had some very thin pine shavings from work here at the house, so I made some little "cake" with PJ and wax. I dip Skoal, so I washed a couple of empty cans and spooned it in there to dry. Also added a bit of mag. dust to it. I also keep my pjcb's in skoal cans. Pretty handy. But I'm gonna give the duct tape a try too.

^ off topic, but try some RedMan chew, NO fiberglass like Skoal. Just pure dried, sugared tobacco leaf.

on topic; i found a tube of liquid "fire paste" in my local outfitters...great stuff except it evaporates after a while.....PJ kicks it butt any day!

Well, really I dip Grizzly brand. I was just being generic. Wow, now skoal has added fiber glass huh? What next steel wool. I used to chew, but don't like it near as much as dip. I'm gonna quit soon anyway. I quit smoking a few months ago and just wasn't ready to give up my wintergreen too.

Ugh, I just quit dipping a month ago. There's some kind of non-tobacco mint-based stuff you can buy. I need to get some of that if I'm going to stay off of it...

it's called mint snuff. Available from a website of the same name. Never dipped but that stuff is good. Fresh breath too.

I've been doing the duct tape PJCB packets for over a year now. Been carrying some made over a year ago and they've held up really well. Instead of the cotton balls I use ribbing cord like upholsters use. Picked up several feet of it for a buck or so at Wally World. Works just the same, just easier to work with with the duct tape.

I've got a bunch of fatwood slivers and shavings from making firestarting kits. I may start sprinkling some of these in with the cotton then seal up the duct tape. Can only help.

great idea on the duct tape ,,,gonna go and make some and try out

Some small fragments of wax in with the cotton would turn it into a sorta' oil-burning lamp -- the cotton being the wick.
