Another reason to carry traditional knives

I don't know how people do it, but that d--m thing got in the way every time I had to stick something in the pocket or get something out of the pocket.
Exactly why I don't like pocket clips.
Most people I know don't keep much at all in their pockets and can sacrifice one pocket for a knife.
As a general rule I carry modern folders at work and traditionals when I'm off duty.

I have begun to see their use at work in a back pocket, a normally unused pocket and out of the way. I still don't like how they feel in hand while using.

Definitely a bit edgy about tip up carry.

Pocket clips are the Devil's playthings.

:p

Still on the search for the perfect pocket clipped pouch for a traditional.

Somethin' like this?

My solution was simple. I made the decision that if I had to carry something clipped on my person, it wasn't going to be my knife. Instead, I decided to carry my smartphone in a horizontal holster on my belt. (It was getting too big to stick in my pocket anyway.) That opened up a pocket for exclusive knife carry . . . in my case my weak side front pocket . . . and voila, the problem was solved. :)

My not having a problem comment had nothing to do with your story about getting cut - it was in response to jackknife's post:

The only modern knife I ever had open in my pocket was a flipper being carried loose (not clipped). People can carry what they want, any way they want...but clipping a modern with the blade against the seam of the pocket virtually eliminates the possibility of it opening. (The only way it can open is if it moves away from the seam).

I think what happened was as I pushed my cell phone into my pocket the bottom edge of the phone caught the thumb stud pushed the knife to the side and open and as I continued to push down it sliced the top of my knuckles to the bone. Did not take any offense to your post at all. just trying to clarify. Thanks for all your post and input hhmoore you are one of the folks that make this sub forum so special.

Thanks for explaining that. I was having trouble figuring out how that happened as tip up carry usually orients the spine of the folder against the pocket seam and prevents the knife from opening.

I always carry a traditional and sometimes add a modern folder. I agree that having my modern clipped to my pocket makes using the pocket for other things a pain. So, i either dont put anything else in that pocket or put items that i dont expect to reach for often. Its worth it to me in outdoor settings where i am carrying the modern in place of a fixed blade. Day to day i just use my traditional pocket knife and leave the modern at home.
All this talk about tip up carry and knives opening in your pocket makes me have to ask, isnt tip down carry the safest ? I assumed this was the case and 2 of my 3 modern folders are tip down. If i am wrong someone please enlighten me.

Grateful - I'll send you a PM with my thoughts on the matter. I'm afraid that we're focusing a little too much on modern knives for this subforum.

Thanks, i appreciate it and you are probably right.

I love my GEC.Also love pocket clips.....not for the reason you think! A pocket clip lets me know:
1)the person has a knife
2)lets me know if he is right or left handed.

Why, WHY do they like a knife stuck with some metal clip right at the top opening of the pocket???

Fast one-handed deployment. When a guy is on the job site, or trying to dismiss a rabid badger from his ankle, there is no time to enjoy the pleasure of finding a traditional knife in the bottom of your pocket and using two hands to get it into action. And then there is little issue of not having a locking blade.

I love my traditionals, but I'm just too impatient to root around through a pocket full of stuff to find my knife. It could very well be a mental disorder, but it is what it is.

I have carried a Buck Spitfire off and on. It's nice having a knife that I can open up and close with one hand and no doubt it's handy being clipped on my pocket. On problem though, it doesn't have a bottle opener. Nor does it have a screwdriver or anything else. Just a blade. It gets in the way when going for my SAK. It's a nice knife but it doesn't get much use anymore, always sticking with my SAK.

I've never had a problem reaching into my right front pocket with my modern folder clipped there; and, for the most part, until recently, that knife would more likely be called a brick than unobtrusive. It's just a matter of what one is used to doing. I find wrist watches to be awkward and annoying, now, because I stopped wearing them 15-20 yrs ago.

My traditionals ride in my left front pocket, because I don't generally carry anything else there.

*Edited to add: if your knife opened in your pocket, you were doing it wrong ;). Carry tip up, with the blade against the seam, and that can't happen.

I can echo these statements concerning moderns. Although, I'm opposite in carry (clipped to the left pocket, so all my clips put the blade side tip down and up against the seam of the pocket which prevents accidental opening) even though I'm right handed. For what I do for work a modern folder is more practical. But the traditional is not far away, in the next pocket over, haha. But I will say, when I'm not at work I'm usually sporting just the a trad.

I'm finicky about watches too. I hate them, and although I must wear one for work, I never wear one away from work.

It seems like the older I get though the fuller my pockets have become. I don't really know why though. Actually, I wear cargo pants/carhartt work pants dang near exclusively now. The other day I wore my 5 pocket blue jeans after not having worn them for over 2 years, and I was cussing the whole day. Just not enough pockets. Haha.
