Among the Samburu people in NW Kenya one part of the marriage ceremony is for the husband to start a fire using the drill method. In case he fails, and he may not take help from anyone, in principle anyone can claim his wife to be.

sounds like a "prove you can provide" type of ceremony. Would you want your daughter marrying an idiot who can't even make fire? Especially in a predator rich area.
