Another S30V Chipping thread

camillus states 60-62 for its s30v-havet used my new dominator hard yet but the old one was as tough as anything-

benchmade states -58-60-i have a mini skirmish and a bradley alias2-the bradley has been great for the last few weeks-skirmish had a little one(chip) once

wonder if spyderco is softer than 58-60 or does it some other way?
btw im a tile setter and i cut open crates and box's of tile and stuff-

I don't understand what's with all the hulabaloo with regards to edges chipping. You get a free serrated knife. It slices better.

As a 3 year follow up, a Krein grind and several thorough rebevelling have this 59 RC Native performing just fine. I think if I had myXX coarse DMT when this originally happened I wouldn't have had repeat offenses. My 58 RC Manix performs even better, getting extremely sharp. It if off to Tom Krein right now getting a regrind to .015" as 2 1/2 years of tough use and sharpening had thickened up the edge a lot. Now it will be back to it's old self. I still like VG-10 or especially CPM D2 over S30V, but those 2 and my S30V Millie I gave my dad perform fine. I think the heat treating has gotten better since the early chipping episodes, and the fact that I now rebevel knives prior to use cuts down on those factory overheated edges chipping out on me.

Thanks for the update.

Yours are posts that I look for. Always worthwhile.

My native is waiting for me to finish reprofiling it flat to the stone. Took it most of the way down. I think I should have bought more of these before they discontinued it. Not that I don't have a bunch of good knives, but the native is sweet.

Thanks, I always look for yours as well. My grammar is getting worse because this stupid iPhone corrects what I want to say into mangled sentences, but as long as I can get across my points I'm happy.

my wal mart native has chipped, once. i was cuttign a CD with it because i was bored, and i got a pretty large chip. took about an hour to get it out of the edge on the sharpmaker.

My first gen Manix chipped out rather badly soon after I bought it.

Bear in mind, this was four years ago. This was all unfamiliar territory back then.

I believe that it was just a bit of teething trouble, as it was a new steel at the time and I haven't had any such problems with the Manix in question (after the chips were sharpened out) or any other knives since. In fact, S30V is probably my favorite steel today for a general use folder. One can do far worse, even at higher price points.

Since we can agree that this wasn't just one or two cases and that there was a problem that seems to have since been resolved, has there been any definitive answer on just what the problem was? My guess at the time was a burned edge due to overly aggressive sharpening at the factory.

I think you guys must be right, it's the burning the edge, and it's not specific to S30V. My Stretch II CF (ZDP-189) i just got the other day was chipping just looking at it, i mean i hadn't used the thing and sizeable chips were appearing, very alarming!

After re-sharpening it seems to be doing fine, i've been chopping at the corner of this this maple block to try it out, still stupidly sharp and no chips. Also the tip accidentally got driven 3/4" into the work bench. I had a little accident you see (could have bloody killed myself actually). I'd scratched the blade when sharpening, so i went to take the scratch out on the sisal mop (polishing mop, puts a factory brushed/ satin finish on stuff).

Anyway i screwed up like a doof and let the mop grab the blade, it disappeared from my hand instantly (very dangerous thing to do). After being thankful to be alive, i'm looking around the room for a trashed blade. It's buried in the workbench right in front of me, the tip is fine, and no chipping!

I was half expecting the tip to be broken after seeing how brittle the edge had been. I'm going to make a point of using the knife a lot over the next week or two to make sure, i think it's overheating the edge at the factory making it brittle though.
