i looked through a few threads but still dont know what is low temp silver soldering versus silver braziing. i use harris 45 silver and braze threaded rods to tangs. now as far as guards go ( which i have not attempted) i would imagine that the harris 45 silver brazing tech would get too hot. so what is used to solder the guards. i assume i need a soldering gun but what is the name of the medium ( silver ) rated as --or called. in other words what do i need to get. what percentage silver wire? heating source--would butane do it? i currently use oxy and mapp gas---gets fairly HOT. thanks mark

Silver solder like a 95Sn-5Ag melts at about 400 F. Silver braze melts at about 1100-1300 F. The silver solder can be used with a propane torch. If you are using stainless steel make sure the flux states 'for stainless' . Silver braze will change the HT at those high temperatures.

Stay-Brite Silver Solder & Stay Clean Flux are designed to work together and are what I use for soldering my guards.

TKS pg. 26 of their catalog
Solder # SOLDER1 1 oz. @ $5.50
Flux # FLUX 4 oz. @ $8.50

Pops pg. 16 of his catalog
Solder 3 oz. @ $11.50
Flux 4 oz. @ $5.00

No part # in Pops catalog. Just tell Pops or his wife Kay what you want and they'll take care of you. That's where I get my solder & flux from for my guards. Call them at 706-678-5408 or go to their new website and order online http://popsupply.bizhosting.com/silver_solder.html

FWIW, I referenced the exact same product(s) from both Texas Knifemakers supply and Pops Knives & Supplies. There are also other places to get the same stuff. Stay-Brite & Stay-Clean are what you want though.........IMHO ;)
