Here's where you can say it's a great test.
Or totally stupid.
Or link to the many, many threads about it in the past. :)

I don't do it, but lot's of folks seem to enjoy doing it...so sound off if you feel like it!

The only knife I would spine whack is a fixed blade. End of story. I didn't get to finish my point earlier. That does not mean other people can't do what they want with their knives.

I actually just spine-whacked my spine with the spine of the blade on the Spyderco Tatanka.
Now one of my vertebrae is sore. :(

Not liking the test...but the lock held up fine.

I think it is OK to test a knife's lock in some way that seems valid to your usage. I don't think it reasonable to whine about the results for years on end.

I have had an automatic knife close on my hand from just the weight/pressure of my thumb of the spine while doing some cutting

Is that enough to disengage almost any lock..... The amount of pressure applied with the thumb compared to the amount of preasure on a spine whack is a huge differance......

That was the only time it has ever happened. You asked for an example of why the spine would have pressure on it and I gave you an answer.

A stabbing motion can create downward pressure on the spine. Or disengaging a knife that is stuck in a material.

I have spine wacked my old Schrade 250T a number of times deer hunting back when it was my standard deer hunting knife. I have no problem doing this, but I know if I break something, it's my problem.

Rumor has it OP spine whacked a knife so hard it created this massive explosion . It blew him back 100 yards and knocked him into a coma.

During his time in his coma he had vivid visions of a character named stab man . When he came to he wrote a book or 2 and the rest is history . I saw hooray for spine whacking ,whack on stab man , whack on..
