Another Stabilization question

Hello all, my search-foo was not very good tonight. I was wondering if stabilization affects (slows down, stops completely) oxidizing/UV responsive woods like Osage, and if it changes how deep the change is as opposed to unstabilized (for redoing the color at a later date)?

While I have your attention- 1a)does rawhide dye well, or at all? I would like to attempt to do my first wrap with one and would like it darker. I thought I would pick your brains before trying and making myself waste material, like I am sure I will.

1b)I also assume that it is either oil or crazyglue finish- I have only tried the cyanoacrylate finish once with somewhat satisfactory results but am about to begin with some unstabilized woods I've never finished out to knife standards and know how well I do a tung oil finish but the extra hardness of glue intrigues me. As I understand both penetrate the surface so I am assuming (I know what that means- just won't make one out of you) that they are not complimentary.

Thank you for your time.

IIRC stabilizing won't provide any UV protection. A film-building topcoat (e.g. varnish) with UV inhibitors will slow color change but not stop it. I was reading a few days ago about a UV inhibitor that worked differently than the standard "sacrificial" type that is slowly depleted with UV exposure. I'll see if I can find the link.

I wonder if it would be possible to incorporate a UV inhibitor into a stabilizing chemical?

A feature of the Resinol 90C is that it glows when exposed to a UV light(black light) so you can see if it reached full penetration.

adding things to it for UV inhibition and that property are sure to collide...?

I have heard....(not seen it first hand) that bright osage color is captured when stabilized. I have some but have not had it done yet. Very nice root osage in bright orange yellow when its ready I can tell you for sure. Maybe others will chime in on this. Larry

Thank you for the responses so far. I am making an osage axe handle now so that would not work well stabilized, but I really was surprised at the chatoyance seen and would like to capture it for longer time as I have seen the browning in minutes as I was working in the bright sun, more for knives in the future. Hopefully some one will chime in about this moreso (this is the first time I've had Osage as nobody that I know locally even knows what it is), and can inform me on my other questions as well. Off to scrape some osage!
