Greetings,

I ordered the Buck cadet stockman and really like the pattern. I'm looking for an upgrade and something with 2 backsprings instead of 3 that are on the Buck.

There are so many companies I need some help.

Here's what I'd like.
3.5 " closed or smaller.
A good quality knife that is a good value.
How's this look?

Thank you very much.

If you are wanting a real user, carbon might be a better fit.

Dave,

I'd give a good look at the Case 3318 (or 6318 if you prefer bone) in CV.

Very small (about 3.5"), easy to carry and takes a wicked edge.

Got mine on SMKW for less than $30 shipped not too far back.

The "32" pattern would be a good one as well if you don't want rounded bolsters.

My beloved Case Medium Stockman has 2 backsprings. If you get the yellow handle models they are great values- and they come in either stainless or carbon.

Dave,I'd go with Elliot on this, and IMO rounded bolsters is the WTG

It would help some if you told us how the knife is going to be used, and in what kind of conditions. There's alot of variance.

The Buck 300 class of pocket knives will take a horrendous amount of hard use, so are you looking for similar, or something nicer in the cosmetic area? Natural handle materials or synthetic?

Case does make some very nice stockman patterns, with choices of handle materials as well as stainless or CV blades.

The Eye-brands that Mike shows are very good knives. I had one of those stockmen and it was a great knife.

Alot of very great old Camillus and Schrade Old Timer can be found at resonable cost on E-bay.

Hello Dave,

I also have to wholeheartedly agree with Elliot, Vince and mnblade on the Case XX #6318 in CV steel. She is one helluva working fool as an EDC and can be had mint and unused condition on the secondary market(eBay) for typically between $30.-$40.USD. And if you take reasonable care of her over the years, one of your kin will also be able to enjoy her as well..:)

I too like the 6318/3318 Case in CV - I carry the larger version of it all the time. I like the 3.5" version too though.

But for a great value the Eye brand 350DS stockman pictured above is a fantastic little knife and a good value.. Compact, and very user friendly.

Thanks for the replies. Here's a little more info to clarify.

I'm in line for some customs and testing out patterns. I'm into fit and finish. Looking for bone. It will probably open a few letters and that's about it. Ability to get a wicked edge is a plus.

How about the 3 1/4" sized Case stockman? Any good? Price doesn't matter too much as long as it delivers on quality.

Sorry for the rush...kids and wife breathing down my neck.

Have a good day,
DF

Dave,
I think most custom stockmans are going to be way different than your run of the mill prod. stockman.
I'm a bit baffled, you are only going to open a letter or box or so,so why 3 blades ?
You'll get the fit & finish on the custom, the prod. version,if your looking for the wicked edge, get the carbon, you can easily sharpen that razor like
As far as a custom stockman,I had one from Al Warren ,it was a real fine knife.
I've seen others in pictures,Shadley has a gorgeous one,but I've seen a pic the Bose version with the warny & pen smaller blades that looked really great
Good luck on your quest,
-Vince

For the same price and the same pattern and the same online dealer...

Queen Amber Carved Stagbone Small Stockman - ACSB
But in D2.
When rebeveled it takes and holds a wicked sharp edge. It comes off the sharpening jig hair shaving sharp.
A quality knife.

Although the Queen Small Stockman #26 - ACSB is smaller than the Case 3318 (yellow), the lenghts of the 3 blades are the same.

And I know nobody will ever talk to me again but...
I find no comparision in the quality between the Case 3318 (yellow) and the Queen Small Stockman #26 - ACSB.
Back springs are square to each other.
The grind on the back and sweges of the blades are crisp.
Not to mention the blade rub on the Case, (my bad luck!)
(Sorry!)
The Queen is totally worth the extra.

Schatt & Morgan makes a real nice stockman, (they have various name for if - stockman, Gunstock, and Reverse Gunstock.)
Very high quality fit & finish with beautiful detailing and etchings. Stainless steel blades.

Their smaller stockman is called the Railsplitter; it's another winner.

In carbon steel I like the Moore Maker in smooth yellow bone.
The blades are 1095.

I'm a huge fan of the Schrade-USA Old Timers. They had several different models that could be considered stockman knives, in three different sizes. The brown sawcut delrin handles are the most common, but there were also special editions released with blade delrin, jigged bone, and smooth bone. Here are a couple of 'teaser' photos:

My most recent stockman purchase is a Case with CV blades and bone handles. Three blades, two springs, and rounded bolsters. The fit and finish is great and the knife is beautiful. Model number 6318CV.

Hi Dave,

Great to see you hanging around here.

I was writing a reply this morning when something hung.
I see the Case CV has been covered as well as some other great suggestions. All would take as much as you would reasonably give them as a good worker.

Here is another knife, maybe with a little better finish if you are looking for something a little fancier. I like the looks of the 2008 one a little better than the 2007 model.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will get one of those 6318's in CV. Being in Hawaii I don't have any dealers to go check em out.

I'm looking on the popular auction site and see some older ones. I've read on the forum about older Case knives being better quality. Is this true, or are the new ones just as good? If older Case knives are better, what are the better quality time frames?

Also, some of the older knives on the bay don't list the blade steel. When did Case introduce stainless steel blades? For example, would all the Case knives from 1977 be carbon steel?

Thanks for the help.
Dave

If you want to go custom, I would look at Gene Shadley's first. They are a bit more than some other customs, but I think the quality is as good as it gets. My Shadley stockman probably has the (at least one of the) best fit and finish of any knife I own.

If i were you, with no way to see the knives in person, I'd order from a reputable dealer that can send a no-hassle replacement or refund if you get a stinker.
Smoky Mountain Knife Works, Shepard Hills Cutlery, etc.
