Thanks for all the links and tips on this site. I finally got the ember after lots of tries. Now I can't wait to get stranded in the woods for weeks on end.

Finding the right wood was the hardest part for me. I just needed to find something medium-soft, straight, and used the same piece of wood for the hearth.

Where's the notch cut? Congrats on the coal. I've never seen one done without a "slice of the pie" cut out.

Far left is the spindle. Second from the left is just a random extra piece of wood. Third from the left is the hearth, and has the notch cut out towards the top. The big piece just held the coal. I don't even know what kind of wood I used for spindle/hearth, I just found it on the side of the road. Worked tho!

O.K., that makes more sense now. I was about to say, I think you're onto something if you got that glowing like that!

Nice job!

I have some time off these next 2 weeks. I might give it a go.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Chris

Maybe you could turn on the ceiling fan for some simulated wind.:D Then you'd be all ready to get lost in the bush.:D :D

Yeah, really. At this point I'm totally set for when I get lost in my crappy apartment with no backyard.

Next up, the outdoors.
