Another survival hatchet

Steel handles ain't good for using nor carrying.
Agree. In a survival situation, your cutting tools need to be versatile, which means you'll probably need to choke up on the handle for finer tasks like carving and notching. That would get old on an Estwing in a hurry.

That is quite a nice collections of hatchets and hawks. Of the ones you have used, which ones do you like?
I actually don't use them much at all. I've got a stump on my porch that my brother brought me several years ago. Occasionally I go out and wham one into the stump. My favorites are the crkt chogan hammer and the council hatchet.

This little Vaughn super sportsman mostly gets used for things around the yard, but I could survive pretty well with it if I had to paired with a good knife and small pruning saw.

I don't normally paint my axes and hatchets or anything, but recently I decided to throw a quick rattle can job on this one to see how well / long it holds up.
I used it for just a couple minutes today limbing some pruned branches before breaking them down and already I can see the paint isn't going to last long.
That's pretty much what I expected though .

75? I’d say you’re surviving just fine, keep doing what you’re doing.

Discussions about “survival knives” almost always wind up with the toughest, most unbreakable ones getting the most backing. Survival hatchets? Estwing fits that to a T.

very cool 75 year old, showing us all those sharp objects/hatchets..

Double my age, & for some reason that gives my love for blades some meaning. Just saying

What's this weird GPS thing? I've never seen a round GPS before.

When I was a boy scout at maybe 10 years old or so I got a new Bridgeport boy scout hatchet. It was steel, one piece, green, with wood handle scales. I've loved them ever since.
