Well home again after another full week in the country. What can I say, beats the hell out of working for a living… !!!

This trip I probably shot more critters with the camera than I did with the rifle, a couple of reasons for this…

1) I do like taking photographs…. DUH …

2) We don’t have a big freezer at home and I have all the venison that it can take, after the trip in March I also filled a mate’s freezer up and I do not generally just shoot deer for the sake of it (well on the property we HAVE to cull the numbers, it was so many last year it really was impossible to bring all the meat out, over 1500 deer in total) and I didn’t see a Buck that was big enough to warrant taking as a trophy. I of course DID level a number of hogs…. They really do make my homicidal (“icidal” for all the comedians..!!!) gene twitch …!!

The weather was OK, warm at the start (unseasonably) and then lost a whole day/night to rain…heavy rain, then cold…really cold for the rest of the week…I can live with it. On the plus side….this time around NO snakes and NO leaches ..!!! Small bonuses I guess…!! The guys there the week before saw several snakes so I was being careful but not a one seen by me !!!!!

The company was great, next year I am not going to take much food with me as one of the guys I hunt with is Croatian and lives to feed those around him, he arrives with so much food he ends up feeding the better part of five of us all week, “no thanks” is not something he understands when it comes to an offer of food … it generally goes “Andrea, fu&king would you like some venison fu&king” (if you don’t know how to speak “Croatian” he tells me you just add “fu&king” at the start and finish of each sentence) … I will reply … “John, no thanks mate, I have steaks/chicken/dead lizard etc with me I need to eat” …. Then it is “Andrea…..Andrea….fu&king” where upon he either serves up my meal or adds my share to what he is cooking… !! This past week we had (courtesy of him) Venison and Pork sausages (all from game he took on our visit in March), Venison Goulash, homemade Minestrone, fish soup (he also has a fishing boat so when he is not filling the freezer with pork or venison he is catching fish), about 200kgs of bacon and lots of fresh vegetables.

Anyway…my shooting was 100% this trip (only missed one shot last trip ;) ) four shots four hogs…can’t complain about that… !!

So …some pictures….

The antlers over the gate into out little hut..

The fireplace (it got a good workout once the temps dropped) …

Some wildlife (alive) pics I took when I went out with the camera for an afternoon (Ok…I confess the Sako was also with me – and may I add that juggling both, and a tripod, in the bush and up a mountainside is a real pain in the…well…you know)…

More great pics, Andy ! Welcome back from what looks like a great time.....love the sound of your Croatian mate....lol....

This one was onto me and I could not get a pic of him out from behind the tree…

Now… anyone who knows me and my reaction to hogs will know the self control it too for me to get couple of these…

A little out of focus as he was going to fast…. And he is about the size of a gerbil (settle down folks – there are OTHER forums for that…!! )

Looks like a great time. It's nice to see some scenery from the other side of the world.
Thanks for the pics.

And a few hogs that I found when photography was NOT my primary concern….

The “Justin” Hog… just-in-case I didn’t see another, shot first afternoon out, by the time I got down to it, about 200yds away down onto the creek flats it was pretty much dark (I shot after the sun had set) …

The next few are a good sized boar I shot, he had me a little confused as I was hunting up on a group of them (including the live sow pictured above) and I could see that they were all medium to small in size, none were about the level of the tussock grass on the side of the mountain… I got in to around 30yds and through the scope and binos this one had me a little confused as the size of the head seemed very disproportionate to the height, so …in the interests of science ;) … I took the shot only to discover that he was actually a largish boar (for this area) who happened to be standing in the entrance way to a Wombat hole (putting him about 12inches below ground level) … pity he had very little in the way of tusks…a result of the very rocky ground in the area…

And a small sow that was too stupid to run away like the rest of the hogs when the boar went down in a crumpled heap…

BFSHog6.jpg

Now this evening I was about 40yds from my truck and heard the sound of “something” tearing through the tussocks, I unslung and raised the rifle and made out the black of a hog going left to right at speed about 30yds out… I think I may have shrugged and said what the hell before firing….not sure who got the biggest surprise when the shot (and FLASH – 21inch barrel on a 308) were followed by a deep meaty THUMP…

When I was here about 5 weeks ago I shot a single hog…. Just to remind you all…. This was her….

BusseHog1.jpg

One afternoon I was hunting back down off the mountain and across the spot I shot her, going for a look I was surprised to see a patch of trampled dirt where there had been lush green grass and all I could find of her was the skull/jaw and an unidentified small bone….the dirt was a patchwork of prints and such from everything that had dined here…!!

BusseSkull.jpg

With this in mind I was walking out of the last afternoon with the camera and passed where I had shot the third hog on the Monday before (this was Thursday).. two large Wedgetail Eagles took off, I would have LOVED to get a pic of them dining out… and this was all that was left of the sow…

BFSCorpse.jpg

This made me check on the boar and other sow on the way up higher… the boar was flyblown but otherwise untouched… the sow was GONE… I mean NOWHERE to be found. She was wedged in the fork of that log I took the quick pic of but I walked out in a 20yd radius and there was NOTHING at all to be found…!!!!!

All in all it was a great week….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh…. and in tribute to my new favourite TV series…..The Walking Dead….

Andy please check my "New Guy Working His Way into The Hog Pen" thread for gratuitous Sus Scrofa Texas style. We have a never ending supply, year round open season, and people throw roses at your feet and buy you ammo when you kill tons of them on their property. I use latest gen night vision and an AR chambered in 6.8 SPC2. I get my share in daylight with my longbow.....if ou are ever here in TX look me up and we can take my 76 FJ40 Toyota out looking for sounders. Nice photos by the way. Makes me want to shoot my Sako!

Thanks all...out here hogs are meant to be shot... big little no matter it is best to deck them all, what I hate is stalking up on a big buck and putting our a big boar in the process...(did that in March)...tests the commitment if you get my meaning.... ;)

Andy :)
