Went out early this morning to do some studies in lighting, contrast, composition, and shutter speeds. At first it was just about photography experiments...then it became an urban hike...which always leads to more observations. Went with loaded pockets, and a light pack.

It was about 5:30 when I got to the "North Shore" as it is called these days. The mixed light gave me some entertainment for a few minutes, a bank on the left, gas station on the right, and across the street my destination to be (in a couple of hours after my hands started getting cold from the wind blowing down river) Stone Cup Coffee shop.

The shore edge of Coolidge Park, the Delta Queen, and the Walnut St. Walking Bridge in the back ground.

The south Shore.

After the sun started up I went for a hike around the area. Even if "surviving" I think it's good to just stop and enjoy the view now and then...my thinking being that if I could no longer enjoy the beautiful things around me anymore then for what reason exactly am I trying to survive?

I noticed various food sources and signs of others. There were a couple of groundhogs munching on the edge of the river bank.

I was too far away for it to show up clearly but than line of opened muscle shells washed up on the shore is a sure sign of Muskrats in the area.

Of course you'd have to set up any traps out of sight of our big brother...

Lots of wild onions around, and not just little onions either.

Then I found these...I need to get them identified but the largest leaves were about two feet long and eight or nine inches wide. I think maybe they could be used to roof a shelter or line a bed.

I found this drive pin just sticking up out of the grass...could have been useful as an improvised tool or weapon.

Having skipped breakfast...and then so much time studying possible foods... my stomach started growling about 12:30 or so...time to find something to eat. I ended up at the River House Bar and Grill on Frazier Ave. Thought I'd take a picture that Jeff might like...

My expression of the Randall interpretation of the Pelton concept of urban survival :D

Cheese Quesadilla with portabella mushrooms MMMMMMM MMMMMMM!!

Had to take a minute to enjoy the view again before heading out.

Hope you enjoyed the hike, I sure did :D

Cool photos, lol, nice view. Does everyone there drink beer with lunch?

Awesome pictures once again! I love the urban hike pics you get...... Awesome find with the wild onions! I've been trying to learn more on identifying wild edibles. Great post:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for the insight...I enjoyed the view as well :D

Thanks Tony, glad you liked it :)

Good stuff! Even better view!

Thanks man, this time of year it just gets better and better!

Eh...not everybody...The first warm Fridays are just special ;)

Good stuff all around.

Thanks Joe, glad you liked the post

Thank you you take amazing pictures. The view is also nice.:D

Thanks for the compliment, yeah...I found it utterly distracting at times :o

Thanks bro, glad you liked the pics. It gets even better when the "supposed to be ornamental" fruit trees start bearing fruit and the black berries are in. Wild edible are a favorite area of study for me...I want to spend more time on it this growing season.

looks like a relaxing time, there's nothing like being out before the city awakes, I like the river shot with the delta queen!!!!!

awesome photos! i love the ones that are in the early morning, great shots:thumbup:D

Thanks guys, I've just recently gotten more into the more "artistic" aspects of photography...I'm really getting into playing with the shutter speed and aperture size in low-level and mixed lighting.

I'd like to have an area in a city I could actually go walk around without having everyone stare at me.

Thanks for sharing, such a nice view ;)

Those are some good looking pics and it looks like a good time. You have really inspired me to try and go out and do an "Urban Hike" of my own. It would really be a different experience then I am used to. Oh I also wanted to comment on your previous thread in regards to Rail Roads. I work around them and you were correct, there are more supplies around RR's then anywhere else I have ever encountered. It is quite amazing.

Thanks for posting things like this. I am mostly wilderness based in my thoughts and experience and through threads like this I have become more conscious of my urban awareness and opportunities.

Beautiful shots there. What make and model of camera do you use?

I was gonna ask the same...I shoot with a 50D.

Btw..How do you like the handle on the Hest?
I want to pick one up but I have big hands:thumbdn:

Great pics, as usual. I enjoyed the "Big Brother" is watching shots. Those fish-eye lense cameras have become ubiquitous here in the Not So Democratic Peoples Republic of NYC.
It's getting so you can't find a quiet alley to empty your bladder in when going home at zero-dark-thirty in the morning without finding yourself on Candid Camera!!

Not that I, or my aging bladder, would ever do such a thing, Ahem......
