Off to the prairie this morning with the Mrs. Second week in a row that I was stumped on the deer sightings. It is doubly tough to catch them with the two dogs running around, but it was a good walk nonetheless. Even better that the Mrs decided to come and play with knives too!

Leaves are now gone and light rain kind of gave it that blustery day feel. Glad we brought the coffee thermos. Max running in the scrub.

When having the coffee, it is always fun to grab a stick and play

Wife gets jealous of all that play though

cool pics man.... i just love that KAT knife with the rounded end and osage scales.. i may have to order one of those...:D

Thanks for sharing!

There's not a better time to be in the woods, than this time of year.

What's better than enjoying a walk in the woods with the wife, your dog and some knives?

seems so exotic when you see pics on-line,

My Inlaws are on malden , their backyard turns into Ojibway park, the are right next to the path beside the ball diamonds so I have spent a fair amount of time in that area tracking deer and foxes and looking for rattlers.

great pics , thanks for sharing.

Very punny, kgd! If you or Mrs. kgd are into making wreaths for the holiday season, Bittersweet (Celastrus scandens) fruit makes an attractive addition. Very nice shot of the Phragmites as well.

For those of you who don't know, the flower head of Phragmites is a half decent tinder. It can be used with a friction fire coal. Just make a big bundle so it doesn't burn your hands before it flames up. AND BLOW, AND BLOW, AND BLOW............... :D

Hey Jiimi - yep thats the spot. I live about a 5 min drive away on Canada street of Todd Lane. I was laughing at your comment though. If I had a choice between spending time with in-laws and rattlers, I'd probably choose the latter also :D

Thanks for the comments everyone. It was only about a 40 minute walk, but it was fun to have the Mrs. attacking wood with knives. Stomper she already asked me about when that Kephart will be coming in so she can compare it with the others!!!

Nice pictures KGD. Leaves are almost all off here too. Was going to go out for a hike today but the weather is just too depressing for a hike today.

I kick myself every time I see an Osage Peacemaker. Wish I had gone with that instead of micarta. It just looks so great with that handle material.

Hi all kgd those are some cool pics of your walk. I really like the golden rod. That is Neb. state flower. It also makes for some great fire starter. I will pic the whole plant when dried just about this time of the year and break them into about foot long lengths.
when they are dried like that they snap like small twigs and work just as good for getting a fire started. Just yesterday while out for a walk with kelly girl I started a flowery head on fire with my fire steel. I think they work great for getting fires started and you can collect abunch of them and break them up in no time and have the makings for the beginings of a fire.

Oh ya the knives look great to:D

Take care,

Bryan

Hey Bryan,

That's interesting about using the Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) stalks for kindling. I'm going to have to try that.

Once, I did find a stalk large enough to use as a hand drill and was successful getting a coal with it. Most, though, are too thin, for me at least. I'm going to have to try using the flower head parts for bow drill coal tinder. Have you ever tried it?

Doc

Sometimes I feel like a mircata (...like a nut - "Almond Joy's got nuts") and sometimes I'm wood (..."Mounds don't"). They are both great materials!

Man, some nice pictures kgd, I passed up on a trip through ontario this summer, and Im begging to wonder what I was thinking! :D

Hi all,
Doc Canada, Yea the stalks of alot of plants work just great for kindling
I will hold to top of the plant and use the toe part of my boot and give the bottom of the stock a little kick and break them off that way. I do not have to bend over break them off at the bottom it does not always work LOL but most of the time that is what I do. I also use unflower stack that grow wild here and they can reach up to 10' tall and are like a small tree when cut dwon and broke into foot long peaces. I reall like stinging nettle stalks to and Milk weed stalks work great too. If you grab just 10 dried stalks of what ever plant like golden rod or milkweed and the others and thry are roughly 3 to 4 feet tall and you break off about every foot or so then you now have
30 foot long small sticks do that two more times and you have 90 sticks.
Using dried stalks works just awesome ( well i think ) LOL I will take two small logs or sticks. I put the down about 5" apart then take 4 or 5 dried stalks and lay them on the two logs then I take ( this will depend on your fuzz making skills ) I use 2 to 3 fuzzsticks. I then put the fuzz stick on the 4or 5 stalks then put a hand full of dried stalks on the fuzz sticks. I then take a dried stalk and wrap my pj and cotton balls on the end of that and strike my firesteel onto the long Match or torch that I just made and put under the fuzz sticks and have a fire. I keep adding more of the dreid stalks and then small peaces of wood. This works great if you want to try it.
If I did not explian this very good I will post pics of the process.
As for the flower heads of the goldenrod I have started fires with just a spark from my firesteel. It work pretty good.

Naked I a going to be putting the handles on your knife thursday:D

Rocket bomb you are just going to have to get another Peacemaker with the osage wood for the handles LOL;)

Spending time with Ratters:eek: LOL That might be a better time than with some inlaws :D

Take care all,

Bryan

Naked I a going to be putting the handles on your knife thursday:D

Woohoo! I really like that little knife in the other thread, the one with a 2" blade! That knife with a "naked" tang might work well as a mini-backup knife like we were talking about (RE: Ron Hoods videos).

No rush... but hurry! :D

Yea Naked, Kathy was already taking about a knife blank with neon Pink 550 cord
instead of a regular handle. I will be ordering some for her thursday and some other colors for myself LOL. I was at first not to sure about that little knife that she wanted made up but now I really like it. I can tell she does to she wears that knife and sheath every where now LOL.

chat with you later,

Bryan
