Im looking for an armored watch.

Yeah, I havent found anything that comes too close to that idea. The hunter cased watches or Trench Guard watches, from back in the early 1900's come the closest. Heres a link to what I mean.

But I was thinking of something that is more like a pocket watch where you hit a button and the cover flips up. I think coupling this feature with some sort of coating(something akin to what some people are coating their guns with nowadays), would take care of 98% percent of scratches and dings.

Any thoughts or opinions on this?

Not quite sure what you mean by an "armored" watch - or why you would need one? You want a pocket watch or a wristwatch?

There are plenty of divers around that are practically 'bullet proof' - UTS, Ennebi Fondale, Enzo Mechana, etc. Depends how much you want to spend. :)

Did you follow the link?

Basically I just hate worrying about the faces getting scratched or broken. So I was thinking a cover could eliminate that problem. No I dont want a pocket watch I want a wrist watch with a cover on the face, where you could hit a button and the cover would flip up so you could check the time.

I just said "armored" because that was the closest adjective I could think of to describe what I am looking for.

I don't know of a watch like you're looking for, but I have seen watchbands that have a flap that covers the face, if that helps.

There was a fad for wristwatches with flip lids a few years ago -- with cartoon characters on the lid, and you would flip it open to see the time. They were plastic watches, made for kids ... probably not particularly durable.

Sport watches have recessed acrylic crystals -- they don't break and they seldom get scratched; they're pretty well protected. If an acrylic crystal does get scratched it's easy to polish out.

The other way to go is sapphire. It doesn't scratch but can break, and it's expensive.

Wow, scoper thats nearly exactly what I was looking for, thank you.

A bit out of my price range at present though. like a hundred dollars worth, however I can save up for it. It looks to be worth it.

Glad to help.

Just buy a Seiko diver, either auto or quartz.
They only cost like $150-200 and are built like tanks.
I bought an auto version at Costco for $130 about 5 years ago.
Works like a charm, but looks a little beat up.
Of course, if you want to spend a lot more, get a Rolex Submariner, or IWC Ingenieur like I'm doing.

What about a military like wristband with a cover strap?

Well, Im not really a watch guy. So, I cant see spending 3500 on a watch.

It just came to me one day that a cover on a wristwatch would be great to keep the face from getting scratched.

The dakota looks the best to me, I know about as much about wristwatches as I do about womens shoes. So the different brands mean about as much to me as gucci or prada does. I just go for what looks the best, to me. But of course quality has a lot to do with it too.

I know a lot of folks reading this thread must be thinking it, so I'll just throw it out there - any watch with a decent quality sapphire crystal is going to be extremely resistant to "face" scratches. Yeah, you'll have to save up your pennies for a bit longer, but trust me, it's worth it. ;)

Toughest watch I have owned to date is the titanium series eco drive, from Citizen. I used to go thru at least one and usually two watches a year because of work, this one has lasted 7 years. I am a contractor, and it gets used with hammer drills, swinging a sledge hammer, nailguns, and lots of other things that have shock and vibes like made, but the watch has never failed.

I dare you to go buy a Seiko Monster and scratch the crystal or any halfway decent modern watch for that matter. It just isn’t an issue on modern watches.

I have a Seiko Diver.
Almost all modern Seikos have what they call a Hardlex crystal.
And trust me, they scratch.
Some of the upper end Seikos have Sapphire crystals and they're almost impossible to scratch. They will, however, shatter if hit hard enough.
That's the one advantage that plastic (Hardlex) crystals have over Sapphire.

Im probably just worried about the face breaking or whatever, because when I was younger a friend of mine were clowning around. I went to punch him and he blocked and I hit his watch with my pinkie knuckle, the face broke and a chunk of my pinkie stuck under the face. I know the watch was cheap but still that kind of thing will stick with you.

That and the idea of a "shielded" watch is just kinda sexy to me. I mean in my head it looks awesome and that dakota just floats my boat.

Again thanks for all the replies guys. I will look into the sapphire crystal watches too.
