Found this at the sunken Japanese tea garden in San Antonio TX
Any help would be much appreciated.

Come on did I stump you guys? this tree was cool. the inside of the fruit was like a giant round lima bean

Maybe not. i just walked down to one of mine and it doesn't have that pronounced neck.
It might be Lagenaria siceraria.

I would love to help but seeing as I got my Forestry Degree from Michigan State we didn't cover those southern species especially those from Japan. Sorry really wish I could help.

This is only a stab, but it does appear to be remeniscent of a Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) Tree.

The leaves look like pawpaw. Dont know if the fruit come segmented like that.

ya it was very interesting to say the least. I'm going to take a the pics into my local forestry office to see if any one can tell me what it is.

I can help with this one.

It's a Texas Mountain Laurel. They're a very common small tree/shrub used in landscaping in central Texas. They can handle the drought, heat, and cold snaps well, and have bubble gum-scented brilliant purple blossoms in the spring.

Smersh got it. That's Mountain Laurel alright. When I was a kid, we would take the red beans and rub the eye on our pants real hard. Then use it to burn the neck of whomever was sitting in front of us.

And the purple flowers smell exactly like grape gum.
