I would love to help but seeing as I got my Forestry Degree from Michigan State we didn't cover those southern species especially those from Japan. Sorry really wish I could help.
It's a Texas Mountain Laurel. They're a very common small tree/shrub used in landscaping in central Texas. They can handle the drought, heat, and cold snaps well, and have bubble gum-scented brilliant purple blossoms in the spring.
Smersh got it. That's Mountain Laurel alright. When I was a kid, we would take the red beans and rub the eye on our pants real hard. Then use it to burn the neck of whomever was sitting in front of us.
And the purple flowers smell exactly like grape gum.
