People around here often ask about which knife, which company, or which steel. I thought I'd pose a similar, but heretofore unasked question (at least I have not seen it asked).

You have shunned much of modern society and technology, along with all the hassles and benefits they bring. Instead, you choose to live a simpler life, uncomplicated and more relaxed. As part of that, you live off the beaten path, so to speak, in a small, well-built cabin along with a few necessities to get by in such a manner that you are not struggling to survive. You live away from most people, but occasionally see some. As part of your minimalistic, uncomplicated lifestyle, you appreciate your one knife :D that you use for many tasks on a daily basis. And while it could become a survival tool if neccessary, again, that is not your situation. Yet, your knife is still very important. My question (finally...) is this:

What style of knife do you have with you at all times?

After taking the survey, feel free to elaborate in a post if you wish. :)

I always have a multi. Right now, it's either my cheap Winchester at work or my Surge when out and about.

I chose bushcrafter, since I'm assuming I would have a hatchet handy as well. You said one knife, not one bladed tool. ;)

I think something with between a 5" ~ 7" blade is what I would feel the best using, big enough to do moderatly heavy chores but still small enough to do most fine tasks to  I would take my Breeden 7" PathFinder & have no worries ;)

i think a machete would suit me well.
it can do a lot of things, help me collect wood for a fire, serve as a weapon, use it in the woods to clear my path...
I think I´ll be fine with a machete.

I chose "bushcrafter", with "small bowie 7" or less" as second choice. I would most likely have a nice stout larger sized bushcrafter style blade ala the Koster Bushmaster. And with the understanding that this is NOT my only edged tool, just my only knife. Because, a hatchet, or small axe is as handy as a pocket on a shirt for many random farm, cabin, and primitive living chores.

You missed a critical category between 4 and 7 inches. Ideally, a 5" or 5.5" blade will do anything you need.

Not sure what your interpretation of these categories is, but I chose "Small Bowie," but could have also chosen "Bushcrafter" depending on definitions. What I had in mind is something like the RAT Cutlery SERE (yet to be released). I think that is going to be just about the perfect all around knife.

Not very long ago I would have never considered what I am about to choose here. Seeing as how it would have to handle all my cutting chores, I would Mod out an 12 inch Tram and be set for anything.

This would not of course be ideal for cutting the years fire wood but no knife would make any sense for that chore. This because My spot would be far enough North to have the better part of the year insect free. A 12 inch tram has cutting and chopping power but is also light enough to work somewhat like a chefs knife in the kitchen. It would work well for most all outdoor activity.

Putting to use some of the Mods shown here lately on the machetes, they are winning me over. A short scandi section or thin razor sharp flat grind for fuzz sticks or fine cutting, Convex the rest of the blade for edge strength, and as I did with one of mine, put a razor sharp tip section for self defense purposes.

i'd go bushcrafter. I've just spent the day with mine on my hip and i've split wood and lit a little cooking fire, trimmed trees and plants around the yard, put it to use in the kitchen and the weight is not noticeable on my belt.

I would choose a large fixed blade(over 7") because you could manage to do the smaller chores with the bigger knife, but a small blade just isn't going to chop down a tree

Since I have a cabin I am going to assume that I have a axe and maybe a saw so I really think I could get along fine with a folder. I would probley choose a large trapper or stockman pattern in carbon steel.

As part of that, you live off the beaten path, so to speak, in a small, well-built cabin along with a few necessities to get by in such a manner that you are not struggling to survive.

Assuming a axe/hatchet is included in the "few necessities" included in the cabin, I went for the 4" Hunter.

Kind regards
Mick

If Bushcrafter means something like a good puukko, then that is my choice. Of course, I would also bring an axe. More than one axe, in fact. There's minimalistic, and then there's stupid. :D

With you at all times rules out most of the larger blades for me...that's just not feasible. A solid belt knife would work; I chose the Nessmuk. I have one of Fiddleback's nessies and it would be the perfect everyday work, kitchen, skinning and utility knife. Good poll with a very detailed scenario.

Strictly speaking in terms of design and not materials the closest easy to describe would be the Companion design of Brian Goode.
