......but could have also chosen a folder. Meaning that my always EDC is an 111mm SAK. Given the scenario, I don't see that changing.

I really love my little Krein Woodcarving knife. it is the most specialized bushcraft knife I own.

I choose the big Bowie.
Limited to one knife I chose the bowie as the best improvised shovel, hatchet, oar and weapon.
It may not be the best skinner or easiest to carry but it make up for it in versatility IMO.

If I was properly equipped with a hatchet or Tomahawk and proper firearms I may choose a smaller fixed blade knife.

I chose small bowie. But I have to ask... did I lose all of my other knives in some sort of boating accident, or something???

Besides... I have MORE than ONE knife on me EVERY DAY already! I don't see why that would change at some point in the future.

Machete. I've seen too many folks rely on them for their sole tool to deny their usefulness.

Granted, they seem to be most effective in tropical climes but they should do in a pinch nearly anywhere.

My choice was a bushcrafter, meaning my Gossman WTK or PSKsr, mostly because they are the nicest knives I own, and the ones I am most comfortable using for most everything. My Ranger RD-9 is just a bit too heavy and big for me to comfortable control for light work.

Like many people here, I have so many knives to choose from it is hard to point it down to just one. And as of this moment, I can not remember the last time I only had ONE blade on me when in the woods, or even for my daily EDC's.

I have lived in basicaly those exact circumstances so here's the rub. My most neccessary knife in building the cabin was my H.I. M-43 kukri. However even though I still carried this knife on a daily basis, the knife which saw the most use was my 5 inch blade AF survival knife. My EDC at this time is the R-10 from HI. I chose the something else category because I think the R-10 is a little heavier than most of the bushcrqaft blades which appear to be based on the mora design.

You missed a critical category between 4 and 7 inches. Ideally, a 5" or 5.5" blade will do anything you need.

I'm of the same mindset here... Although this scenario is certainly not my speciality, I'd choose something like the Busse "Badger Attack TAC" (CG BATAC) because of its size, toughness & versatility. I can baton it through wood to no end, and choke up on it using the large finger choil for many duties a smaller blade would be used for. It is light enough for all day carry with no problems, yet with enough weight to be missed if not returned to its sheath between uses. Nice thin profile too, but with a fairly wide blade & a long handle. Ideally, I'd have choices beyond this one knife but sticking to the question at hand, something like the BATAC in this size range for me would be "the one". :)

I chose "big bowie" because I think I'd carry an 8" rifleman's-style knife similar to this one offered by Wick Ellerbe. I figure if this style knife was a good "all around" knife for settlers, mountain men, and other frontiersmen, it's good enough for me. This knife can be used for everything from kitchen work (food chopping, etc...) to cleaning deer and other game to being used as a small machete in the forest for plants that aren't easy to take a small axe to (vines, brush, etc...).

This is, of course, assuming that I also have a tomahawk/hand axe available.

Although I voted for a small Bowie, I think we're all missing the boat here.
McGiver can build a nuclear reactor, repair a Abrams tank, weld a pressure vessel, and peel a grape. all with his SAK.:p
