another woods gun thread- modding a 12ga

Kismet: trade ya :D I'd still love it if it was a 20ga. But hell, I can handle it.

We're all surprised how well the paint turned out. It's a clean and light look.

right on Christof.... that turned out great man... i like it.. look slike a fun little gun to play around with..:)

It's handy and might end up doing more travelling in the van and just getting out to campsites more than some of the other guns do. Whatever I did, the carry and balance are very good.

It looks sharp. And there's always the freedom that playing with a $40 gun brings...not that I have ever found one of those. :D

Check this out brother...

The 12 Gauge Uber Tamer

Outstanding project CitizenQ! Love that stock! Is it a Choate?

I have a old NEF single shot 12 gauge that I sent off to Karl Sokol for some work. He shortened the barrel to 20", threaded it for chokes, installed a weaver rail with a AO peep sight, and a AO front rifle sight. I wanted something I could use a Red Dot on yet still retain sights. When he called to let me know it was ready he asked if I wanted a buttpad of some sort - should of taken that as a hint. Damn thing kicks like a mule. I only fired 8 slugs from the bench & had to call it quits. Thankfully it was on target at 50 yards. Shooting it standing is not so bad because you can roll with it. I dread when I do decide to install a Red Dot. The thought of turkey loads makes me cringe.

Not even going to go into how much I spent on my gunsmithing project gone awry. If I had it to do over again, I'd still do it, though probably not had the weaver rail installed as it's accurate enough with the peep sights.

SO nice to hear someone else admit that the brilliance of their imagination did not translate into the best-ever reality!!!

Welcome to my world. :)

Koyote?

figures. Forty-some years picking and chosing the perfect guns for the hunting I do, shopping carefully, waiting for my opportunities, and the only offer I ever get is for the beater 20ga that got crushed in a farmer's barn. :D

Get a bigger recoil pad. Practice with trap loads. Put in the little brass screw for sighting. Make a vow never to shoot more than one slug per outing, unless you are hunting.

You did a nice job. Is paint hard enough to resist scratching? Really quite well done. Congratulations.

I'll start looking for the astonishing hunt I had with mine. Will post in this thread when I find it.:)

Yeah, I recently put the same Choate stock/forearm on my 21" barrel H&R 20ga. It's a very compact package and the stock set wasn't that expensive. I really want to add peep sights which I may end up doing eventually if I find a good price and willing gunsmith. I haven't tried accuracy with slugs yet, but so far so good with shot. I'm liking it!

I have the H&R tamer shotgun in 20 guage and it works well.;)

Christof love the color A shade darker and it would match my sgain dubh :D I don't care for how the elastic shell holdr changes the balance on a single shot, so I just wear it on my (strong side) left wrist . just as accessable Dosn't change the balance of the gun.
I don't care for the stocks that come on the tamer. I had a choate stock set in my gun stuff box so this is what my tamer looks like now. It is my goto woods bummin' gun now

Nice job, I like it. Great canoe gun. Like the color. I would put a sling on or throw it into one of those Molly shot gun scabbards that has a sling attached. I have one for a slug shotgun. You can buy those types of shotgun cheap. Why not. Great bushgun.

Nice mod! I love the way it came out, great job.

2 things though, remember, CA has a minimum length, but if I remember corectly it's 18.5", so you should be fine. But don't take my word for it, you should really look up the law and know it, in case someone challenges you.

Also, if you're right handed, how come you put the extra shells on the right side? When I had a single shot when I was a teenager, I seem to remember using my left hand to re-load.

According to the .gov website- CA is 18 inches and 26 OAL. You can run down to big 5 and grab any of 6 models they have in stock with the same barrel length, new, as well :D

I'm actually left handed and shoot right handed. I'm a bit odd that way. With a pump I can load left handed with the shotgun on my shoulder at ready, which is what I trained on back in the day. But for whatever reason, ever since I was a 12 year old with a .410, on a break action I hold the shotgun at the balance and load with my right hand.

I will probably sight it eventually. I want to shoot some clay first and see how badly I'm off. As I mentioned, with the static targets I'm feeling comfortable.

The paint is rustoleum enamel, and I took my time and it's got 5 or 6 coats all over. I'm just gonna see.

Ah, I stand corrected. Just wanted to make sure you knew what it was and didn't cut it down to 16" or something.

Oh man, that's weird, good luck with that whole half left, half right handed deal...

I did put a stainless lanyard tube trough the forend and an eye one the bbck. have a sling on it and it is all good. haven't heard canoe gun in years, but it has that feel.

stingray-

ca law is complicated, no worries.

I am a dedicated RH for operations with stuff I learned in the military. the rh reloading for single shots is ust an oddity.

being a natural leftie is a huge advantage in tactical shotgun, actually.

Koyote Thats funny i'm a little like that myself.
Can do most things ambidextrous but have certain preferences for right or left hand, I.E. shoot revolvers left-handed, chop (with axes/hatchets) lefthanded, bat lefthanded, throw and catch lefty, precision carving/cutting with right hand, writing right-handed, can shoot long-guns either way but if its a semi-auto or pump shotgun usually shoot right handed, play (noodle really) guitar right handed etc.
Weird eh?
